Just update to the latest firmware, they are "cumulative" as you don't need access to previous releases. I've been on the latest one since release and haven't had many issues, just some NET related things.

Read the instructions for the firmware. One of the firmware updates specifically states that "you must be on xxxxxx firmware before upgrading to this one". It's a lot easier to take a few minutes to read before hand than deal with a bricked unit after the fact.

upgrade

I am currently running the original firmware on my unit.Has the upgrades offered by Onkyo made a BIG difference?
I have zero issues with the unit and adhere to the adage,"If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
I would upgrade only if would make a large difference.

The major fix is a 24Hz bug resolve. Worth the upgrade.

Quick ?, just got a new Sony tv & setup was a breeze, when I accessed the apps & tried watching Youtube, had no audio. I'm assuming I'll need to connect an optical cable from the avr to the tv correct? Thx

So I decided to replace my Sony 5800es with the 818 (own both, but did it basically for the Audyssey dynamic volume that the wife likes). After setting it all up (FL/FR/Center and highs through Emotiva, surrounds/rear surrounds through 818). I then went ahead and chose front highs in the amp section in the speaker set up. Running neo:x or PLllz should have the highs working correct?

I know there is a step on pg.49 in the owners manual (to choose which set of speakers you want to be prioritized to run first between SB/FH, FW, etc.). I can't get it to work. All I get is "not available" showing up on the front display. Is there something I am doing wrong? Those who run 9.1 or 9.2, did you do this step? Or did you just set the amp selection (to which set of speakers you wanted to run) and then just change the decoding. I'm just wondering if this step is necessary for the FH (or any set of speakers running of an external amp) to work correctly.

Thanks for any help

Nothing is wrong. The 818 allows you to connect more speakers than it can process at one time. For instance, if you had 11 speakers connected and set to large/small (IOW not set to "none") this preference setting would no longer be "not available" and you would be allowed to set a priority for your preferred speaker configuration. The 818 would then default to your preference. Since you don't have FW speakers connected (and set to large/small) there are no other configurations available to set as your preference.

And yes, PLIIz will mix in your heights very nicely with pretty much anything you can feed it.

Thanks for getting back fokakis. I was just wondering because one of the options is FH/SB. I am running both and was just wondering it this needed to be chosen to work correctly. It sounds fine, so I'll take it as working correctly.

How hook to powered soundbar?

I know seems stupid, but I'm in a short term situation where I have no speakers, and want to send sound out to a Yamaha powered soundbar. I'm not sure how to do that. The soundbar has SPD/IF, Coax, and Analog ports.

I thought I could run RCA plugs from Zone2 out to the RCAs on the soundbar, but didn't work

Can anyone tell me how I should send the sound to the soundbar?

Is it pretty common to have hum issues with the 818 using an external amp? i had bad luck last time i tried. I am happy with the receiver, just want to add a 2 channel amp.

I have not tried the latest firmware, will install when I return home the 23rd. I do not see any change log, but definitely new firmware available.

No hum issues here with external amps.

Alan in Boise
103 inch AT screen with 9.x playback. IB subs. Two with dual 15s and one with dual 12s. Screen channels with Minimus 77s. Minimus 7 on front wide and front high and wides and sides. Room is perfect size for smaller speakers like the Minimus speakers. Approx. 17x13x8. Tower speakers were taking up to much room. Onkyo 818 used as pre-amp. Power amp duties handled by HK 2.1 Kenwood KM-X1. Hafler DH200.

I don't use Spotify so I am wondering if it's worth the upgrade meaning has anyone bricked their unit with this update?

Yes I have been following both the 80" thread and the M series thread. A lot of people are not happy. I have been managing as I don't think its that bad but I already use the smart dimming feature so not really a biggie to me. However I do hope they fix things soon.

No humming hear running a Emotive.

Does anyone find that voices are a bit muffled coming from the center channel? If so, is there anything to fix this? I put some rear plugs into the rear ports of my Energy C-3 center speaker (take away some of the bass), but it still seems muffled. All the levels of the speakers are within good range (+2--8, nothing near 12). Do you thing running Audyssey again would help this?

well that would be independent on your particular cc speaker, not anything related to the 818.

If you have Dynamic EQ on try turning if off.

Correct. Since the other options involve FW, and you don't have FW (correct?), you're stuck using modes that work with FH/SB. You need not do anything else to get it right. Enjoy.

If you're using a power conditioner and two or more of your 3-prong bearing components are plugged in to it you could pick up a ground loop hum/buzz. The good news is that this can be fairly easy to resolve.

thanks, the company that made my amp walked me through many things, including unplugging everything on the same circuit, changing cables, cheater plugs, etc. and never could get rid of the hum. amp is sold, was thinking about trying another amp and see what happens. I was just curious if anyone else had hum issues that couldn't be resolved. thanks again
