I have an Onkyo TX-SR504

I played Tron: Legacy (Blu Ray 2d) the other day and there was no sound coming from my surround speakers... at first i thought it was some of my connections, but i eliminated that. Then when i cycled through the different audio tracks from the disc, lo and behold i get full surround from the other tracks!

I have a 5.1 speaker setup and have not encountered a problem like this before.

The english audio is DTS Master Audio 7.1. The other languages are all 5.1 Dolby.

My receiver can only decode up to DTS 6.1... is my receiver not reading the signal from the Blu Ray player properly and thats why its only putting output to the front speakers?

Unfortunately, I dont have any other Blu Ray discs with 7.1 Master Audio on hand so i cannot test this with other movies.

At the very least I would think the player would pass the lossy DTS 5.1 audio track (if available), otherwise your option is to let the player decode it to multi channel PCM which should work.

Well, the Onkyo TX-504 is an older receiver that doesn't have any HDMI inputs so it cant decode DTS-MA, TrueHD or Multichannel PCM for that matter.

How is your blu ray player connected to this receiver? Optical, Digital coax?

Optical connection from Blu Ray (Sony BDP-S570 if it means anything).

Tron:Legacy doesnt have a 5.1 DTS track (nor english 5.1 Dolby). So in order to listen to it in surround, I had to listen to it in French or Spanish!

I guess it is just my receiver getting a little long in the tooth then!

Yep, it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace your receiver if you want some of the latest and greatest features.

BD's normally have a "core" lossy DD/DTS track which although not being selectable, would play if the AVR cannot decode the higher lossless DD/DTS track (which as afrogt noted is not even possible to pass over optical). This core track is what you are hearing being played from the Sony; however, it's apparenlty not being decoded correctly by the 504. Have you tried letting the Sony decode the audio to PCM 2.0? Although not surround, it would at least give you something to listen to.

Anyone can test this. Just connect using optical rather than HDMI and see what happens. I have this movie in bluray and normally use HDMI. I can see what happens if I connect using optical and let you know. DTS-HD-Ma has a backward compatibiliy track hidden. May be it is not hidden for this movie! Weird.

In the Sony, under Setup, Audio Settings, DTS (Coax / Optical), select DTS, NOT Downmix PCM.

Audiosceptics accept audio trials using 25 people. A recent Oxford study with over 353,000 patient records from 639 separate clinical trials shows for every 1,000 people taking diclofenac or ibuprofen there would be 3 additional heart attacks, 4 more cases of heart failure and 1 death every year.

Tron: Legacy is known to have problems when playing back on some 5.1 systems. You should try other BDs with 7.1 dts-MA or TrueHD tracks to see whether this problem is just limited to Tron. When your player is set to DD and DTS for the coax/optical output, you should get DD 5.1 and DTS when playing BDs with encoded lossless tracks.
