Is there a way to have both 7.1 surround and zone 2 speakers if I use an external amp for zone 2?

Yes ... connect a set of RCA cables from the Zone 2 pre-out jacks to the external amp inputs (or analog inputs on an old AVR) and connect the speakers to the external amp (or AVR) speaker posts.

Note also there is a dedicated thread for Denon 3311CI Owners ---> http://www.avsforum.com/t/1257209/the-official-denon-3311ci-991-owners-thread-no-price-talk/0_100

If you think your AVR is defective, refer to the Owner's manual and reset the microprocessor a few times in a row.
