Greetings AVS Forum,

I'm sorry if this post has been answered more than a few times, but I'm in the market for an AV receiver to replace an open box Pioneer VSX-1121 that died within 3 weeks of my order. My wife is encouraging me to replace it soon to cover the large hole I cut in our furniture for the cables.

Needless to say, I have scoured many reviews and have two favorites (but I'm open to suggestions if you guys have better recommendations):
Denon 2112-CI
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Z0S7OM/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=
Yamaha 671
http://electronics-expo.store.buy.com/p/yamaha-rx-v671bl-av-receiver-black/220376858.html

We live in a decent sized apartment with a new Energy Take Classic 5.1 system for our living area (about 13'x12' with couch against the back wall). It sounded great with the Pioneer until it crapped out.

Priorities
1. Sound quality
2. Reliability
3. Video upconversion/upscaling (if you guys think there is value here.)
4. Plenty of room to grow
5. Apple friendly (not required)

Current devices:
55 inch Sony SXRD
Energy Take 5.1 classic
Verizon Fios (HDMI)
Bluray player (HDMI)
Pre-2007 Xbox 360 (component with digital audio)
Nintendo Wii (composite)
N64 (composite)
And iPhones and iPads

Likely Future Devices:
Wii U (HDMI)
Next Xbox (HDMI)
Apple TV (HDMI)

What do you all recommend?

Thanks in advance,
MW

Dumb question on my part, if you had a warranty and I know you've thought of this, what's wrong with sending the open box unit back as defective?

Sorry, could have included this in the original post.

I sent the pioneer back just inside the online warranty date (Amazon was great). It was open box, so there weren't any others (and due to being burned once, I didn't trust another one...) I should have the full refund sometime today and am looking to replace it soon.

Hope this helps. Thanks!

It's always fun going through what you've been through. Nice to read you got a full refund and now you're able to move forward again.

Imo and its just my opinion. Unless there is a feature on something I cant live without I buy like this.

Receivers I buy for sound
Tvs I buy for image quality
Etc

With this in mind Receiver Denon and never look back.

So Mike, to confirm, the Denon 2112 is a good buy with solid sound (ESP for around $470 delivered)?

I'll pull the trigger on the Denon very soon if it's a solid buy.

Thanks again!

My opinion, at this level, they're all good. I'm a fanboy of both Denon and Marantz with an emphasis on Marantz.

With that in mind, based on what you posted, you'll be well served by the 2112Ci. I have no knowledge of Yamaha AVR's.

Personally, I encourage everybody to step up to a Marantz SR5007 for it's full set of pre-outs so if you decide in the future, you're able to add an outboard Amp. A Marantz SR5007 can be had shipped, for $750.00 and with the ability to later add an outboard Amp, you're future proofed in that vein. So my recommendation is, go with what makes you all warm and fuzzy inside.

Hope the above helps with your decision.

Just wanted to let you know that I am seeing 2113 beginning to sell for 500-520$, would be a good welcome upgrade from 2112 and within your budget.

Cheers!

Wow...thanks SM!

I'd been stalking most of google shopping/amazon, etc to find the best price/value.

Is the 2113 the same sound quality as the **12 series and were there any worthwhile improvements/omissions from last year?

As always, thanks in advance.

If you review the first few posts in the Denon AVR-XX12 Owner's thread linked in my sig, you'll note the 2112CI is the best bang for the buck in the XX12 series, although has been selling for less than you list above at a number of authorized resellers since it was released last summer 2011. Give AV Science sales and Electronics Expo a "call" for a better deal. Also note that as this model is on clearance there are likely even more dealers now selling at the same much reduced price. In some instances, the vendor may be out of the 2112CI and will sell a 2113CI at the same price; however, before accepting, ensure you review the differences between the two models (see description of each in post #2 of each of the XX12 and XX13 Owner's threads linked in my sig) as although the 2113CI gains a few features over the 2112CI, it also loses some as well.

Thanks jds, I'll call them after work today.

Online, the best prices I've found are:
2112- $434.88 (shipped from EE after discount code applied) - have you seen it cheaper?
2113 - $508 (shipped from DIYMicro.com)

First, is DIYMicro.com reputable?
And second, is the 2113 worth the extra $75 for the video upscaling and other upgrades/losses?

I'll likely make a purchase sometime today or tomorrow. Thanks again for your help!

DIYMicro isn't listed as an authorized reseller, whereas EE is not only authorized but also one of the most recommended resellers on this forum. Only you can decide if the 2113CI is worth the extra expense based on the features you need.

I would get the 2112 from EE. 4k video is fine as long as you don't have to pay for it. The likelihood you would ever find 4k upscaling useful in a receiver is slim to none. Any 4k TV will almost certainly do it's own upscaling and probably better than any receiver currently available.

All,

Looks like EE doesn't have the 2112 in stock (though the website still shows it). They quoted me a price of $520 shipped for the 2113 over the phone which seems pretty reasonable, all things considered. Does EE haggle these prices or are they fixed (just at a different price than the online store)?

Or I could look for the 2112 elsewhere for a bit cheaper (probably in the $475 range)? Or even try to purchase the 2112 from EE online to see if they'll honor the price with the newer model?

Sorry for going in circles in this thread...just trying to make the best decision...You guys have been great and I appreciate your help!

Order the 2112CI from Amazon and you'll likely get the 2113CI for the same price.
