Hi all,

I'm new and was wondering if you could help answer some basic questions about the TX-SR605.

1. I have a turntable, and a phono pre amp that I would like to connect to the receiver but I am not sure which source to assign it to for best sound. I currently have the tape, cd and game/tv channels being used.

2. what is zone 2?

3. I have an optical audio cable that I connect from the blu ray player to the receiver yet I cannot get it to work even though I've assigned it properly - any ideas?

thanks!

Welcome to AVS Forum.

1. Plug the pre-amp into any analog audio input as they're all the same.
2. Zone 2 allows you to play an analog connected source to another room, independent of what is playing in the main zone.
3. Make sure the blu ray player is setup correctly to output audio over the optical cable.

Thank you jdsmoothie! Just to confirm, if I hook up my phono pre amp to the game/tv the results will be the same as if I hooked it up to Tape - I thought I may have noticed a difference.

Lastly, I have a pair of Bose 161's connected to the surround jacks in the back - if I want to hear music using them, along with my floor speakers what is the best listening mode I should select?

Yes, AFAIK, the inputs are the same.

Are you trying to use the speakers to increase from a 5.1 to 7.1 setup or as Zone 2 speakers? If 7.1, most likely use "Dolby Pro Logic IIx" although that's really more of a personal preference setting. If Zone 2, there is no DSP processing mode other than STEREO.

I don't have a subwoofer, or center channel for proper surround, I just want to hear music out of four speakers. So I connected two floor speakers, and two surround speakers to hear music through them, and occasionally movies.

So then you're expanding from a 2.0 to 4.0 setup. Use DD PLII - Cinema or Music whichever you prefer which will then also pass the DD/DTS 5.1 audio downmixed to the 4 speakers.

Sorry, one last question - I connected my new speakers (Cerwin Vega VE-12) to the Front Speaker jacks, and I have my 161 Bose connected to the surround jacks, and I turn my receiver on to Audyssey and it keeps cutting off, with the Standby light blinking red - any ideas why?

Generally the result of a loose speaker wire from one post touching another.

I set it up as DD PL2 but my two surround speakers barely are playing any parts of the songs (i.e no vocals, or drums, just a few key parts) - is there a way to adjust that?

The majority of the dialogue is designed to come from the center channel, although in your case that would be distributed evenly between the FL/FR speakers. The SL/SR speakers are only for surround type audio and therefore won't be heard that often. Additionally you can bump the SL/SR levels up a bit more if you prefer.

thanks so much! I set up the surround and front speakers at 6db each - does that sound (no pun intended) right to you?

I'm not going to lie, I'm a little disappointed by the Cerwin's - the sound is overall too thick - I had a pair back in the mid 90s that i loved, and these don't quite hold up to the same standards - or I need to balance them out with a pair of high quality bookshelf speakers...

Doesn't matter what it sounds like to someone else, it's how it sounds to you. After running Audyssey, if you bump up all channels by +6db, it's no different than simply raising the master volume by +6db. You may also want to consider using the "All Ch Stereo" mode which will pass the same FL/FR audio to the SL/SR speakers which some prefer doing as it's easier to hear the dialogue in that mode.
