@my848: i use 2 of these hk avr1700 for that same purpose; 5 channel stereo in the living room and then the 2nd avr1700 for office and outdoor speakers. use the 'rec out' rca plugs on the back of the avr1700 to feed your panasonic receiver. these are analog only and i believe you have to go thru the menus to make them work.

@tibimakai: there are no software updates available. read thru this thread, someone posted a hard reset format to reset the avr1700

science flies you to the moon, religion flies you into buildings.

i just bought a refurbished AVR1700 off of eBay to replace my Onkyo TX-SR508 that i sold along with my Infinity TSS-450 speaker setup. have all of the issues been addressed with the refurbs? did i make a mistake by selling my 508 or will this be the improvement i was hoping for SQ wise. I've got 30 days to decide i guess, my budget is going to be $250 max if i do replace this... sorry to ramble, just trying to get an idea of how the refurbs are...

Has anyone hooked up the 700 or 1700 to a pro amp on the sub output? I have a pair of DIY subs and I'd like to know if the receiver will work. I dont want to buy a clean box

My Equipment:

Fusion 12 Tempest (LCR)
DIY Sealed 18" Dayton HO Refrence Subs (2)

the more time i spend with this thing, the more i like it. it absolutely kills my old Onkyo in the SQ department and the vTuner is AWESOME!!! i also really,REALLY like the fact that you can adjust tone/surround mode/etc. for each source individually. i've had 0 problems yet. i did run the ez set and then reset the unit and calibrated myself, it sounds great either way. also, i've seen all over the web that the 1700 has no direct audio mode when in fact it does, it's the tone out setting. also, for those that complain about HDMI pass thru, there is an option in the system settings tom pass HDMI audio to the TV, while i realize this isn't truly pass thru, one could always turn the receiver volume down and use the TV speakers.

Well....I just bought an avr 1700 for the bedroom system on ebay. I used to have one but returned it because I needed something higher end for the main living room system so I have an avr 3600 in there now.

I wanted a higher end AVR, but the WAF budget only allowed for $200

I lucked out and got the 3600 for $300 off Craigslist and just got the 1700 for $120 shipped.

Nice:D I really like my 1700 so far, hoping I don't encounter any of the problems I've read about. But, that is what warranty is for.

5.1 AVRs don’t get much love around here. I’ve had my 1700 for over a year now, and it’s been flawless. The HDMI switching is great, and I love how quiet this receiver is when turning on and off. I do wish HK would go back to the blue lighting scheme they used years ago. The white power led can be a little distracting in a dark room. It’s a slick-looking receiver though. I’ve always preferred HK’s aesthetics over most other brands of AVRs.

The network features of the 1700 are great as well. I love that I can browse and listen to shared music on my home network directly from the AVR. The OSD is a little archaic and uninspired, but it works and it’s easy to navigate. This receiver runs really cool. Even after hours of use it’s warm to the touch but never hot.

FYI, there is new firmware out, but I have not tried updating mine.

I received my AVR 1700 I bought from ebay yesterday. Hooked it up in the bedroom to my Boston Acoustics VR20 towers and cheapo Sony powered sub and I must say it sounds fanstastic. MUCH better than the Denon AVR-E300 I tried in there and returned to Best Buy (Denon had nice features, but sounded like s#$&!). I downloaded the Android app and I noticed that Harman updated the app. It works fine but it seems like the app can stream music from the phone to the AVR but I wasn't able to test it since I don't have any music stored on my phone. Anyone else have any experience using the new Android app?

Nice, i'm glad I went this route, I almost bought an e300 or a yamaha 475 over the 1700...

Thanks for the heads up re: firmware.

My AVR 1700 has been running almost non-stop since August without a hitch. I bought it @ $200 because I needed something on short notice and didn't want to spend a bundle without doing thorough research. I had planned to upgrade by now, but I don't see any reason to. The 1700 has more than adequate power and all the features I need for 5.1 home theater. As far as I'm concerned it's a very high value component.

Edit: I just upgraded my firmware. Had a little trouble getting the AVR to recognize the firmware file on USB, but after several tries it ran. The manual setup menu now allows the user to assign a crossover number to the subwoofer. That's the only change in user interface I have noticed so far. Here's the link to download the zip file.

I just downloaded and applied the update to mine. No issues recognizing and running the update. There is a PDF file attached that discusses what the update does. It's mainly better communication with the remote app (both Android and iOS) and improved vTuner performance (now the front display displays name of station, etc.)......and yes, there is now a crossover setting on the subwoofer (my cheapo Sony sounds a bit better now).

I think my problem might have resulted from Mac/Windows incompatibility. Once I copied the .fw file to an MS-DOS formatted drive with nothing else on the root directory, it ran fine. The ability to set crossover frequency for the subwoofer is a major improvement, if you ask me. Not being able to assign a specific XO number made me a bit uncomfortable.

Mine worked perfectly in Win7 copying the .fw file to a FAT32 formatted usb stick.

Word of warning, the update also changes the power off of the AVR! It now acts like the AVR 1x10 line. It now will go to "sleep" if you press the power button. You have to hold down the power button on the remote or the receiver for 3 seconds in order for it to go into standby (off)!

I somewhat regret not holding out for the 1710 but it was more than twice the price, when I bought, and I don't think it's twice the receiver at all.

I think Airplay steaming is better since the firmware upgrade. Only recently did I learn to stream Spotify from my Macbook Pro to the AVR-1700 via Airplay, but the signal would sometimes cut out. Also, the receiver would occasionally switch to Airplay spontaneously while no audio was running on the MBP. That hasn't happened since I installed the new firmware.

I've owned both and the AVR 1700 seems to be more powerful, plays louder and cleaner. In addition, it has a better chassis...it's not as cheap looking as the AVR 1710, the 1700 has the same look and build as the step up AVR 2700, 3700. The 1710 got distorted playing my Boston HS 460 towers when I cranked volume past -17db, but the 1700 went up to -3db and was playing louder and clearer on the same speakers and in the same room! At a given price point, extra 2 channels, MHL, Bluetooth, etc.....sacrifices must be made somewhere. Don't believe the specs, the 1700 is a better amp!

That's good to know, man, thanks for sharing. No more non-buyer's remorse for me, especially since I don't really need MHL, Bluetooth or the extra channels. I read some negative reviews of the 1700 after I had already bought it, but none of those accounts matched my personal experience with the receiver. The primary feature of the 1710 that I would like to have is EzSet/EQ III because I have been less than impressed with room correction on the 1700. In redundant tests I get inconsistent results.

Diceman, how well does EzSet/EQ work for you on the 1700? I more or less gave up on it and started equalizing my system with an SPL meter.

It seemed to work ok when I ran it other than setting my l and r at 40hz and my center at 80hz when they essentially the same speaker. I ended up doing a reset an calibrating with a db meter app on my phone. I am very happy with the results
