Basically it was about good speakers being expensive and that you won't get good speakers for $100 or even $500 (even more so a 5.1 channel set). I've taken apart cheap speakers and they universally have only a single cap on the tweeter and a cheap inductor on the woofer. Many of these people talk about getting "better" amps, a futile move given their speakers. As you say, get room treatments and better speakers first.

Will an XPA 5 driving only three channels perform better than an XPA 3 due to the bigger shared power supply and capacitance? Or is this "advantage" neutralized by the way the individual amp sections are designed?

Same question for "two channel" operation... would an XPA 5 driving only two channels be the equal of an XPA 2 since the extra three amps are idle?

Good grief, how much power do you need?

A strong solid no BS 300wpc full range at 4 ohms. A little more to be on the safe side. Neither my receiver nor my integrated amp have it... the system goes into protection at around 103db (11 feet away form speakers) on certain hard rocking music passages when using my integrated to power the mains... and I don't want it to do that. This is with PSB Synchrony 2 towers, about 89db sensitivity I think, and this is with bass management on (80hz crossover).

I thought of making an aggressive offer on the XPA5 but only planning to use it for the mains. But I want to make sure I have really sufficient current and power to drive these speakers to full potential for LOUD ROCK.

MCACC eq on and phase/standing wave control too... I have meant to try it with no EQ. But I think I tried it in pure direct with the same result. I ought to try again to make sure it still does it running flat. I have also considered trying a 100 hz crossover but seems it is a little much with my mains.

Thanks for the .02 it is a good idea.

Ah, I thought you were implying the XPA-5 (or 3, same power ratings/channel) was not enough and you neededmore power than that..

If you have 5 (or more) speakers it won't hurt to get the XPA-5 if you can get a good deal on it. Otherwise, Emotiva's Holiday Sale is on so You can decide among the XPA-3, XPA-2, and XPA-1. The XPA-3 and 5 share amp modules; the XPA-2 is a different beast, and the XPA-1 (monoblock) even more so.
