Got Airplay working the other week. The problem was at the router -- had the Denon and the Airplay devices on seperate VLANs (I have a managed network switch). Works like a charm now. Also stoked that I fixed some forced PCM source downgrading problems caused by my matrix switcher hook up. This is my first set up with an HDMI switch on the front of an AV Receiver and it makes set up even more complicated.

The zone 2 & 3 circuits generate additional heat when they are enabled. Check to make sure they're off if you don't need them.
Unfortunately, the video circuits generate a significant amount of heat even when they aren't in use.

Audyssey settings.............
I've been farting around with different settings trying to get my Denon 4520 to sound good in the 2 channel stereo mode. It's just never sounded quite right to me for music (I almost always listen to music in 2 channel stereo). What I found is that Audyssey cranks up the treble while cutting the bass. Trying to compare Audyssey with the avr's tone adjustments I had to set the treble up to 5 or 6 (6 is the maximum on this receiver) to match what Audyssey has done. When you couple the heavy treble with the negative bass it sounds harsh and brittle especially at loud volume and with busy music. I just got my 3311 back from the shop and if it wasn't such a pita I'd like to hook that back up to compare the 2. I had the 3311 sounding really good with music before the transistors went away. Does this Audyssey treble boost suggest anything in my environment or in my other gear to anybody? Maybe there's something I can change, I don't know????? I've already upped my subs by 5 db's and that helps with the LF but obviously doesn't help with the boosted treble.
BTW, I'm not sure if this question belongs in the Audyssey or Denon threads so I'm posting in both.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Another question:
I found a deal for a $10 bluetooth receiver

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13845_3-57579056-58/get-an-xtrememac-bluetooth-audio-receiver-for-$9.99/?tag=nl.e796&s_cid=e796&ttag=e796

but it requires a 3.5mm audio in. Anyway to make this work on the 4520?

For those of you claiming that the 4520 is running "hot", this is a subjective term. Can you please measure the temperature and post it here? Without facts and data, the discussion has no value.

For example, I just used a infrared thermometer and took several readings on my 4520, both at the power amps and at the video processing section. The highest temperature I recorded was 115 degrees F. I have three inches of clearance above the unit, and the equipment rack is completely open on the sides and rear, so airflow is excellent. Is this hot?

Under what conditions did you measure the temperatue Jerry? MV setting? Program material? Music or film? If music, what music, Vivaldi Four Seasons or Metallica? How long was the AVR turned on before you made the temperature measurement? So many parameters to be defined in order to make a conclusion. smile.gif

I have been watching HD video material for several hours at MV=15 with full 11.1 DSX enabled. Does that really make that much difference? I have measured the AVR temp a number of times, both when it has been idle, and when it has been driven hard, and have seen very little differences in temperature. At no time did I feel the temperature was "hot", although I don't have a lot of input from other posters with which to compare. BTW, I use an external amp for the LCR speakers. Back to you.

Quite a broad question for a conclusive ending, eh? Now you introduced another "variable" by adding that you use an external amp for LCRs! How's the external amp doing in the "bakery"? LOL

P.s.: I suppose you wanted to say: MV=-15 dB. tongue.gif

-15dB, of course, thanks.  I want to preserve both my hearing, and my speakers. eek.gif  And the external amp (Emotiva XPA-3) is running cool to the touch, not much hotter than body temp.

Edit:  I guess my point is that it would be nice if posters would include actual temperatures when they make claims that the unit is running hot.  No need to get Feri-esque (like this term?) and require all sorts of data about how long it has been running, what is playing, the external ambient temperature and humidity, and the lunar phase...

No the Marantz just has a more expensive marketing team that has to cover their costs. biggrin.gif

Again, it's more than $600 difference in cost between the 4520 and the 8801.
$600 for the unit and another 1-2k more for amps minimum, so make that more than 3k difference in price. You can't use the 8801 without spending on amps.

$430 where I got mine difference. Also amps dont cost 1-2k minimum. I bought my xpa-5 for $799 shipped.

Most people running either unit is running a external amp and using the denon as a preamp. I understand your argument, but again, most users here arent using the internal amps. Then again, some are.
If you are like me, the cost difference is only in the actual units because you bought a external amp already.

A 5.1 system with an SVS sub, given the 92db sensitivity of my speakers....any more volume...my wife would leave me and the neighbors would complain...

Wow someone will end up getting a very good deal smile.gif

btw compared to the Onkyo 5508 + Emotiva XPA-5, the Denon 4520 sounds more musical (IMHO). And yes I am not missing the amp so far.

For just that it is a waste of money. I prefer NEO:X over DTS, but it is not worth a thousand dollars to get it.

^ I agree. The 4520 also has DSX for 11.2 (I believe the 4311 does too?). I still prefer DTS:NEO X though over Audyssey's implementation. It sounds more fluid.

Just to clarify, the actual street price difference between both units is way more than $600 and closer to $1,000 actually. Nezf is just quoting $500-600 since he used some special credit card rewards points to get that lower price. You would have to go to an AD that only marked down the 8801 and didn't mark down the 4520 at all to get anywhere close to a $600 price difference. A4L typically has the best AD prices to be found online (outside of eBay), and I would be shocked to see the 8801 sell for $2300 ever ($600 more than current 4520 pricing), especially given its current pricing is $2900.

I would particularly like to see a pro review with the 4520 set in preamp only mode, vs the 8801 using the same external amps. In terms of feature set, it would be a tie, but overall I would venture a guess that the 4520 would be chosen as the best buy on price difference alone.

I've had my 4520Ci for about 2 months now and have had problems with it forgetting the password to my Pandora account. I did a quick search and didn't come up with anyone else reporting this problem. I'm not sure what to do......
It doesn't do it every time but 1 in every 3 or 4 attempts to log in to my Pandora account, the password will be blank and it requires me to enter it in again. Very long and tedious process. Has anyone else experienced this?

Name is nezff.
How in the world could you possibly know what price I paid and know how I got it? I don't know why you intend on quoting street price when it's totally wrong. I used no special card or magic getting either unit. The actual price I paid compared to both units was exactly $381 the first time. This time I'm actually getting the denon even cheaper so now it will be $431. I have no idea why someone in their right mind would pay full sticker price for any unit. That's just idiotic and absurd. As for the text in bold, you sir would be shocked I guess.

If anyone wants to know what authorized dealer I bought both units from, feel free to pm.
