I'm assuming your projector doesn't have built in speakers (i.e. you would want to use the real external speaker setup in the theater room) so you wouldn't want to use Monitor 1/2 outputs, but rather use the HDMI Zone 4 output to feed the other rooms.

When the AVR takes the HDMI signal in the Main Zone and "strips" the audio for processing for surround sound, only video is passed out through the HDMI Monitor 1/2 outputs. The use of HDMI Monitor 1/2 would be for switching between multiple displays in the *same* room, e.g. you normally use an LCD for watching TV/movies but occasionally use the full PJ/screen setup for "movie night" viewing. Or maybe you have the PJ setup full-time but also have a small LCD monitor that you use for changing settings or running Audyssey when you don't want to fire up the PJ.

In contrast, the HDMI Zone 4 output is an independent path that just serves as a matrix switch, and the HDMI signal is unprocessed, just switched through. So it will pass the video AND audio from the source untouched to the other TV's.

There is a setting for which USB is active. If you set it for the back then the fans can be powered by the unit.

Very handy way to cool an AVR. I'm looking forward to replacing my trusty 4310 with a 4520 soon ! smile.gif

That did it, thanks!

For anyone else looking for the setting, select iPod/USB as the source, then press "option" on your remote. The fans stay powered even when another source is selected.

I'd like some observations from other users. The lights on the front panel for Wide, Subwoofer and Height speaker don't come on at all even though sound is coming out of all of these speakers ( as well as all the others), regardless of which sound mode that I use. I think that they used to light up, up until a few weeks ago.
The chap from the Denon distributor first suggested that it was the sound mode that should be looked at, then he suggested turning Audyssey DSX off then on, now he says that as long as the sound is coming out, there isn't a problem.
Would anybody who has these lights showing please let me know what surround mode and inputs turn them on and which turn them off?

You may have the front display set to show input channel indicators. Change it to show "output" channel indicators and then you should see what all channels get used.

Refer to page 153 in the manual.

Hope this helps.

Audio1246

Thanks heaps for that. You pointed me straight to the solution.

It seems interesting to me, that while it was on input setting, regardless of the disc being played, the subwoofer light was never on.

Is the '.1' not really a discrete channel on the discs as I believed?

I need an opinion,

I received my replacement 4520 today, it has a 208XXX... serial number, the one that failed on me was 212XXX.... From what I have read, this is from an early production run when these units were having most of the problems they've encountered.
I'm wondering if it's worth the investment in time to set this up, it will take several hours to get it all done, or should I send it back and say no thanks?

chances are this one will be fine, but there are no guarantees: I trained my wife to do all this stuff, while I earn the $, an' tweak it when I get home...

but, Friday, we're gonna move together my 3312 to t'other side of the room...and Jerry Rig 11.1 with an old AVR...yes, eventually, I'll have to have one of these...

just 1 more pair of KLIPSCH Classic speakers...

There's no way I could get my wife to even attempt to do it...
By the time I take the 3313 out of the living room, set it up in the bedroom, install the 4520 in the living room, reprogram the remotes, run Audyssey on both, run REW, make adjustments, test everything...It's 8~10 hours or more worth of work.

I'm just not feeling to confident....

Well, I'd put this one in with just 1 source & run a few simple tests, test tone et C. before investing more time. If all goes well proceed from there.

The last one ran perfectly for two weeks before I had problems with it, that's why I'm a bit leery.
Lately, Mr. Murphy has been no friend of mine....LOL

*EDIT* Those KLIPSCH HERESY II "SIGNATURE EDITION" speakers look very similar to some KLH speakers I had many, many years ago..

Would it violate any forum rules to post the serial numbers of defective units we had in our possession so others can track whether or not they received one that's been making the rounds? I have 2 of the 3 serial numbers of defective 4520's I'd be happy to post.

It would be interesting to have a list of serial numbers along with a list of the problems they had.
I've got one number...Hopefully not two...

I have been running my 4520 with a 208xxxxxx serial number since late-October - no problems! I had to reset the microprocessor twice, early on, but I can't even remember what those issues were at this time.

IMHO...I think it it is probably worth your time to give this one a try...

Good luck!

To what end? Any defective units would have been repaired and either returned to the original owner or resold as a refurbished item.

From what I've read, and experienced, Denon is a reputable company. I, in no way want to imply anything to the contrary.
So...
Given the complexity of these devices and the wide array connection possibilities it would be, sometimes, impossible to replicate a problem on the test bench. In these instances it could be possible to chalk the problem up to another piece of equipment in the system. In these instances I can see a reputable company reselling the unit without any repair being made, as they saw no problem to fix. As such, I think it would be interesting to see if the same serial number turns up more than once.

"To what end" nothing more than curiosity...

And now back to our regularly scheduled programing....

I just did a quick rudimentary setup of the new 4520, hookups are as follows...

DTV box connected to CBL/SAT on AVR with HDMI
Monitor 1 connected to TV with HDMI
Network connected with CAT5e to AVR hub 1
Front speakers only hooked up.

On initial power up, I did a full reset per instructions in post 3 of this thread, hoping this would clear any prior user settings, account settings, etc..connect
Checked Firmware, latest rev is installed.

Using the 4520 remote, I changed the network settings from DHCP to static.

Using my laptop to connect to the AVR works, however, any settings I try to change through the GUI do not take. For instance, Top Menu>>Setup Menu>>General...Zone Rename...
I try to change "Main Zone" to Living room...The screen updates, and it's back to Main Zone.

Any ideas, am I missing something?

Hoping so of you knowledgeable people can help me out. I've been the proud owner of a shiny new 4520 for about a week now. Everything has been great up until today. Suddenly out of nowhere my PS3 won't handshake with the receiver anymore. I literally can't do anything on the PS3 without a "snow" screen appearing and then my samsung monitor telling me to check the signal cable. The only way to get a signal is to unplug and replug the hdmi cable. It's very infuriating as the PS3 is what I use the most, and I can't use it with my new 4520. I've tried everything I can think of... both hdmi cable work flawlessly connected directly to the monitor. Not a single hdmi input on the receiver works with the PS3. Every other hdmi device I own is functioning normal when connected to the receiver. I even pulled my old pioneer receiver out of the closet to eliminate any doubt. Needless to say the PS3 worked as normal when connect to my pioneer. I've reset the microprocessor twice which didn't help at all. Disabled deep color on the PS3. From what I've gathered it may be a hdcp handshake problem. The strange thing however is that it was working fine for about a week. Is this something I should talk to Denon about? I really don't want to keep this 4520 if I can't use my PS3 with it. I've recorded a video of the problem I'm facing.

Ensure the cursor isn't going to the "Set Defaults" option prior to pressing ENTER, otherwise, although a reset should have cleared up any problems, also try just unplugging the unit for a few minutes.
