Since you are having problems... I would consider buying the extended warranty from them too.

You can't ignore the wealth of AV knowledge that UK/Europe magazines and reviewers offer, add the fact that you can have any web page translated doesn't mean you need to speak those languages. smile.gif

When we are capturing all the various reviews of the Oppo Digital players you see a very international representation of AV reviews, should that be any different with Denon AVR reviews? tongue.gif

Do you have a 2012 model or 2013? (Serial Number starts with a 2 or 3)

Starts with 2

Yesterday came home and tried ZONE2.... it worked.

This is after spending probably an hour the day before going through just about every scenario I could think of to get it back on with no success.

I'll play with it fo a while and see if it continues to work.

Re-cap..

Originally I added a set of ZONE2 speakers last week. I configured the amps using custom so I could turn the front L/C/R amps off (active speakers) and use the AVR amps to drive my 4 ceiling surrounds and ZONE2.
I set Surround wide to ZONE2 which indicates that those speaker terminals be used for the ZONE2 speakers.
Initially I got no sound except from an analog source so I discovered, with help from here, that I needed to hook up RCA audios for all sources being used on ZONE2.
That worked and I was happy.
Next day I turned the system on and ZONE2 would not play. I changed input to Zone2 than back to the original input and ZONE2 began to work again.
Next day could not get ZONE2 to work at all no matter what I did.
Yesterday it just started working.

Sorry to hear of your problems. However, this is why I try to always buy new gear. Saving 10 - 15% on a refurb. over a new unit isn't worth it to me. That said, I hope yours gets fixed quickly, and 100%.

We'll see how it goes. Right now, it has fixed itself. Very weird as I made no changes.

I will see if it keeps acting up for now. Until then its staying hooked up.

Fooled around with the system today. So far so good. Zone2 is working flawlessly, changing sources, switching main to off. Trying to break it but can't.

Hey guys. I really like this machine. I feel I may really have a home theater. I feel a little confused though. Hope someone can help shed a light. I'm running 9.1 right now with front heights. I feel the auto setup has everything setup pretty good. I've played with manual setup too. Pretty cool gui and all.

Anyway, all these different sound fields, I feel I might be missing something. I know that if I hold the green button on the remote it allows me to change settings. Just not sure which is best for the 9.1. I'm sure not any of them are 100 percent real. Something has to be created from at best 7.1 input. But I see fields I've never heard of.

Seems I read something about the Neo:X. That was one reason I got the Denon 4520 in the first place. But things like:

Neo:X Cinema(Back/Hieght)
Dolby Digital A-DSX (height
PLIIx Cinema A_DSX(Heigh, And so on. Seems like some of them have to do with the Audyssey.

So what do others use. OH. For movies for the most part too. Is there one setting that seems to be more realistic than others..

Thanks.

And if my serial number starts with a 3, does that mean 2013, and is that a good thing?????

IMO, you need to experiment with the various surround options.
I prefer Neo-X DTS over Audyssey's iteration.
As for year of make, I was an early buyer, but I had no issues and I am still using the first FW. I see no reason to upgrade that. A later make probably means more bugs are sorted I guess.

+ 1. I have been using DTS NEO:X for a while now. I like it. Skyfall in 11.1 last night had a couple of friends yelling " that was awesome " during the movie when cars and explosions went roaring across the entire front soundatage. !!

As already suggested, which surround mode you choose should be based on personal preference, although as the majority of movie audio is still only 5.1, in those instances the rear surrounds must be simulated for 7.1 using either Dolby's version (DD PLIIx) or DTS's version (DTS: Neo:X) and then to add the Height speakers for 9.1 you can use either Dolby's version (DD PLIIz), DTS's version (DTS Neo:X), or Audyssey's version (DSX). Although Audyssey's DSX only adds either Height and/or Wide speakers, the new Audyssey DSX 2.0 can simulate up to 11.1 from a 2.0 source just as DTS Neo:X.

And yes, the 1st digit of the serial number indicates the year it was mfr'd (eg. 3 = 2013) and the 2nd/3rd digits the month (eg. 02 = Feb).

Is anyone using a wireless transmitter for their surrounds? I was hoping to use some active speakers I have lying around with my 4520 and was wondering if anyone had done something similar?

I have tried a wireless connection for my subs and it didn't work well--too much interference with the 20 devices I have on my home wireless network.  Too many pops and crackles.  You might have success.

An old AVR can do to start, if you have one not being used.

Will I find La Scala, or better, to displace my La Scala fronts, before I displace my kg1, kg2 & kg3 with Heresy or better?

Is there any chance the problem isn't actually in the receiver?
In other words, might the connections to the Zone 2 speakers be unreliable?
Or could someone have been "adjusting" them?

That's so funny. I was thinking I didn't have anything just laying around. Forgot about the Sony I just pulled out where the Denon went....I might try that just to see what it sounds like. Thanks.

But, I'm sure i'll like it, seeing I do have the speakers. I guess as for the amp. I'd at least want a 2 channel, 150 watt each channel, to try to match. I might even look for a 3 channel to cover the 3 fronts, and take some pressure off the Denon.

But being new, never had anything this nice. I'm really needing some others to help guild me on this one. I'm trying not to spend more than I need to. And not wish I hadn't planned my system better. So far, I think I've done pretty good.

Thanks again for any and all the help. This forum has probably been one of the best complete forums I've ever ran across......

I bet that works well Jerry. I'm using an Emotiva XPA 200 to run the front L / R speakers. I tried to watch Skyfall the other night with the sound at 82, and my two loud movie loving buddies told me to turn it down ( I settled around 78 ). I imagine a lot depends on your room / room size and speakers.

So, I got the 4520 home and set it up. Ran through the set-up wizard and Audyssey. Only problem I had was with the subwoofer. It wasn't working, then I realized I hadn't turned the darn thing on. Configured most things and got the volume display to show up like I'm used too. Watch the first few minutes of Revenge of the Sith on Blu-ray--my go-to test. Seemed much better than my 3808 and had all the clarity I remember and would so very much miss from my Anthem MRX-700. It's now updating the firmware. So far I'm happy and relieved to have a receiver that isn't causing my speakers to hiss and pop when I turn it on and off. Like the binding posts and the look. Not as large or as heavy as I thought. Am looking forward to connecting my DVD-3930CI when I buy some analog cables. It's been gathering dust hooked up to the 3808 via Denon Link. I've been using my Oppo via HDMI to play SACD's with the Anthem, and am looking forward to hearing analog audio again. Tomorrow I'll skim the Denon to English dictionary and make sure it's all set-up as I want.

One thing I wanted to add. With ARC and my Anthem I found my subwoofer levels were a bit too high. I was told the ARC was right and that I shouldn't change a thing. Well after I ran Audyssey my sub sounds as powerful and smooth as I preferred from my 3808. So far I prefer Audyssey.
