No -- pay attention to the words "custom settings" -- the entire noun phrase is the subject of that sentence

Of course you can listen in stereo/direct mode. You just can't access the separate custom settings bank that lets you configure 2ch differently than multich. This is noted in the beginning of the thread because it was a departure from previous high end Denons (and was actually reversed with the follow-up models like the newer X5200).

Whew! That's a relief, thank you! But I have to ask, if I want to listen to pure audio (unprocessed, untouched of any sorts) 2 channel direct why would I need any "custom" settings at all?

People like knobs and dials. Plus some people truly do prefer different bass management settings for music, eg using a 80hz crossover for movies but a 40hz crossover for 2ch music.

In an extreme case you could have different dedicated speakers for 2ch music independent of the multichannel setup. The 4520 would let you store different settings for levels, distances, crossover etc. in this setup. The difference is that other similar models (past and future) allowed the same customization even without using a different pair of speakers.

If you're using pure direct mode then you are bypassing all processing, including bass management.

What's the multichannel preamp output voltage on this AVR?
Does it have enough voltage to drive a typical Crown pro amp which has 1.4v sensitivity?
I've read on the internet...there's a guy who has to bump up his speaker trim to +9dB on his 4311 AVR + Crown XLS2000 just to get 75dB test tone. source

I use a pair of Crown XLS1500s for subs and no problem with setting a 75dB baseline, getting trim settings of -11/-7 with gain on Crowns not quite at max.

I think it is laughable that some here are trying to assert that Denon design / industrial engineers didn't know what they were doing. It would be my belief that Denon has some of the best minds in the world in this area. My bet is that they knew exactly what they were doing and the proof is in the sound. It sounds absolutely great...
I would call that mid line separates

I am really surprised you even noticed a difference in the Integra and denon with Audyssey engaged
I had a similar set up.. with a Onkyo 5509....and I really doubt I could tell the difference in the Onkyo/Denon/Marantz in a non sighted test if all three were used as a preamp
Pluses and minus of sound....due to Audyssey...are all the same to my ears

Are you still using the 4520 and if so as a pre/pro or with ext amp/amps?

He must have a subwoofer with very poor sensitivity.

yes...the 4520 is used just as an AVR is my master bedroom

the Marantz 8801/Sherbourn 5/1500a combo runs the main listening room
