flint350,

Was your unit made in Japan? The images on the Denon site clearly show "Made in Japan" on the back panel, I couldn't tell from your images whether yours said the same thing.

BTW, thank for all the helpful information.

Can the 4520, using it's Zone 4 HDMI/matrix ability and/or somehow using Instaprevue, finally allow one to "Watch" one HDMI Source while "Listening" to another, like we could all do for literally decades before HDMI? smile.gif

Also, it's Awesome to hear about Gapless FLAC since the OPPO 103/105 players don't even do that!!!

I am curious (Still have a 5805CI and wanting to upgrade) if the 4520 can accept, not only through HDMI but also through NET/USB, Multi Channel FLAC's and play those? Does it decode/play those or would I have to somehow convert Multi-Channel FLAC's to PCM and send through HDMI? If the latter, then how does one do this?

Also, I know this may be a bit shallow and pedantic, but coming from the 5805CI (and paying over $6000 for it when new) I was a bit appalled when I went to Best Buy and saw the 4311 used Plastic with a Plastic Volume knob, and also had a thin (and what appeared to be easily broken) flip down door that "clicked" in place.

Can someone confirm whether the 4520 has an Aluminum (pretty standard look/feel to ALL volume knobs on ALL makes/models of AVR's up until last year's Denon Models as far as I'm aware) volume knob and whether or not the door "clicks" to open/close (on the 4311 you would push in to lock and unlock which would click/unclick to secure or release the door) or whether it's like past high end models where the door feels heavy/smooth (and also not plastic) and smoothly glides down and back into place?

I don't feel like I conveyed my last few questions very well. If nobody knows what I mean, maybe JD can help me explain a bit better. smile.gif

I sure hope to get one of these guys soon and will absolutely be doing comparisons with the 5805CI (with plenty of objective measurements along with subjective impressions) in my dedicated 20x26.5' highly treated (properly and completely, not "overly") and accurate room.

This is the first AVR I've been truly excited about since the 5805CI and finally feel it may be time for an upgrade, that will actually "feel" like an upgrade!

Also, I am excited to see the return to the (IMHO) much better/well regarded Burr Brown DAC's but can anyone confirm the actual Model # of the DAC's used and how many/in what configuration they're used?

Thanks,

--J

1. Yes, the Zone 4(HDMI) provides for an independent source than what is playing in the main zone.
2. Likely still only 2CH bitstream with 5.1 PCM via NET/USB.
3. AFAIK, same aluminum faceplate as used on the 3313CI.

I was wondering about sound quality with movie HD soundtracks
The Denon 3313 vs the 4520
Would there be any real difference, apart from Audeyssey XT32?
Here in Denmark the 4520 will be nearly twice as expensive as the 3313
Thanks Jakob

Thanks Jakob

The difference in MSRP in the USA is the same, and although XT32 is the most significant difference, the 4520 is also 4-ohm stable whereas the 3313 is not. Look at post #1 of this thread as well as post #1 of the Denon AVR-XX13 Owner's thread for a comparison of the 3313.

Question to 4520 owners: the video chip set in the 4520 is an Anchor Bay set if i am not mistaken. The HQV/QDEO in the Onkyos is said to be superior? Is this what you are seeing. I know one member had a 3009, so curious as to his opinion?

Denon moved away from Anchor Bay 2 years ago and now uses video chips from Analog Devices, with AFAIK, the ADV 8003 (same as in the 3313CI) being used in the 4520CI.

You don't want to use InstaPrevue, as the audio you hear will be tied to the main video screen, plus you can't use InstaPrevue if you are using the Zone 4 HDMI output.

What you would want to do is this:

- Connect 2 HDMI cables to 2 separate inputs on your display, one from a Main Zone HDMI out and the other from the Zone 4 HDMI output
- Select the source you want to watch as the Zone 4 source, and then tune to that video input on your display
- Select the source you want to listen to as the Main Zone source, and that will send audio to the receiver (combined with the Zone 4 video output)

no offense but as a 5805 owner you probably don't lurk with the commoner's smile.gif but plastic is de rigueur at this point, I suggest you float to a best buy and play with the front panels of some of the consumer level AVR's from all brands on the shelves. Heavy, smoothly machined aluminum knobs with metal faceplates is NOT the norm these days.

This is a common problem in the UK too, manufacturers cannot be bothered to integrate DAB tuners (Market is probably too small as limited to UK, parts of Europe and Africa and Australia)..

Started to watch a Blu Ray tonight and the Denon found a firmware update.  It is now in process of downloading, says about 7 minutes but no info on what it does.  I will use the time to check the Denon site.

edit:  no info on the Denon site.  I'll just wait until it finishes and see if anything is obvious.  Later.

BP, Thank you so much for the solution re watching/listening to different inputs!!! I've asked for so many years and on so many different models with the only workaround/answer ever being to use component and HDMI on each source that I was half expecting to be laughed at for asking again! wink.gif I am so very happy this can pretty easily be accomplished now!!

As for the volume knob, I will get to a Best Buy as soon as I can, but living where I do, it's a good 2.5 hour drive to the nearest one with a Magnolia inside it. I take it from your reply, that the 4520's volume knob and drop down faceplate may disappoint me? ;( Again, I know it seems shallow, but I was freaked out when playing around w/ the 4311 last year at BB.

JD said it's most likely like the 3313, but I'm not familiar with that model, so could you (or anyone else that knows) be a bit more specific?

The binding posts look real nice, just like my 5805ci, so I thought maybe on this model the front was metal instead of plastic with a nice door and volume knob, but since it will be awhile before I can make it to a BB I sure would like some confirmation either way.

Last but not least, do you or anyone else know the model # of the Burr Brown DAC's?

Thanks so much!! It is looking more and more like I will be picking one of these up and if anyone is interested, when I do, I will do a full set of measurements along with objective and subjective impressions between the performance, features, and overall SQ between the 5805ci with XT and an AS-EQ1 and the 4520.

Well I ordered mine today. My dealer doesn't have it in stock but said warehouse does. And with the price I'm getting, I can wait an extra week for the turn-around time. It'll be good to be back in the Denon camp. I listed my 57 on that popular auction site.

I took the lid off and took a couple of photos - naturally, I put it back together before looking at them and they didn't turn out so well.  However, here are a few to show the innards.  Looks like the DACs are PCM1795 T.I.

amp guts!!! we LIKE amp guts!!! biggrin.gif

thanks for posting those... smile.gif

edit: it never ceases to amaze me how much more complex a modern avr is than something "vintage"... no wonder there's the occasional unintended feature... puts paid to the line of "i never had this problem with my 20 year old unit" that we often hear... wink.gif

Amazing the noise floor they manage with all that stuff crammed in!
