While I have most of the parts for my new Den theater, I am waiting to redo the den. My ancient onkyo avr has decided to not read my dvrs optical input any more, so.... I need a new receiver probably in the 5 to $600 range. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated as looking on line at site reviews seems to be skewed. Possibly I may use this in another system in the future. Thanks!

What features are essential to you? What's your speaker setup? There are some decent receivers (last year's models) on clearance right now that could meet your needs like the Marantz SR-5006, Denon 1712, or Yamaha RX-A810.

"Guns for show, knives for a pro..."

HT/Living room: FR/FL Sierra 1 NrT, Sierra-1 NrT Center, B&W ASW610, Yamaha RX-A2030, Oppo BDP-93, ATV.
2-channel: B&W 804D, B&W ASW608, Parasound P5, Parasound A23, Marantz CD5004, Rega RP1, Bluesound Node2.

does your onkyo have a coax spdif input? if so, you could just use a optical to coax adapter, and not have to buy a new avr...

+1

There are several work arounds to avoid having to procure a "temp" AVR. Many DVRs also have a coax digital output (orange) so simply connect a RCA "yellow" composite video cable (from a red/white/yellow cable set) from the coax digital output to the coax digital input on the AVR.

I use the coax for my oppo audio input. I'm not sure what is essential as I have not really pondered that question. I am using PMC speakers fronts with 2 fairly cheap rears.and a JL audio 113 sub.

You can also consider using a "Y" coax digital splitter to create a 2nd input to the AVR ....

That looks like a great idea! Obviously only run one source at a time. So I don't need a second optical cable, just the yellow composite video cable? Thanks so much!

Its fine if you must have small satellite speakers. I used to have Takes but eventually replaced them with larger speakers.

The Pioneer BS-21 and C21 would be better if you can get something larger.

Or even better if you have room for the Pioneer towers.

FS-51 with $119/pr with $20 discount using promo code EMCNAJB224
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882117403

C21 center, $49 each with $20 discount using promo code EMCNAJB225
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882117404

BS-21 bookshelf, $49/pr with $30 discount using promo code EMCNAJB226
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882117405

All together that's $220 for a 5.0 setup. If you cant have tower speakers then get two pair of the BS-21. Then the 5 speaker package is $150.

Add this subwoofer for $200 and you're set.

Energy s10.3

$350 for the small Pioneer speaker setup is way better than the Take Classics. $420 for the tower setup would be a big improvement.
