Someone on Craigslist has a Marantz SR5005 for around $500. It still has about 18 months left on the factory warranty, which is really nice.

I'm contemplating buying this to replace my Onkyo TX-SR606. The amps in the Marantz look way more impressive than my Onkyo but I question if I'll notice the difference. Front speakers are Polk RTi-10s, currently bi-amped, if it matters.Center is a Polk CSi-A5, rears are older Polk RT/FX dipole/bipole. Sub is a BIC VK-12.

Is the Marantz a worthwhile upgrade?

BTW, I can get a brand new 5006 for about $100 more (eBay), but the front display is basically unreadable and there are only front channel pre-outs.

The 606 only offers the lowest version of Audyssey 2EQ which cannot EQ the sub, so any Denon (except lowest model) or Marantz AVR will be an upgrade, the 5005 offering Audyssey MultEQ and the 5006 offering the even better MultEQ XT. You would however be better served buying from an authorized new or refurb reseller as most eBay sellers are not authorized and the warranty from a previous owner is not transferable.

So buying from someone on Craigslist ends the warranty, even if they got it from a legit reseller (Best Buy)? That really sucks.

Still, I suspect it's a solid unit and will not give me any problems. My Onkyo has been humming along for 4.5 years without a peep.

By the way, that 5006 only has "2.2" for pre-amp outputs. Not sure why they cheaped-out on that.

That is correct. And, yes, you need to ensure whichever model you purchase offers the inputs/outputs you need.

Is it too much of a gamble to buy one without a warranty? I'd be pretty pissed off if a $500 receiver started flaking out a week after I got it.

Any way for me to make sure it's in good shape before buying?

With 18 months left on the warranty, he's had the unit for 18 months so as long as the owner has been using the unit on a regular basis, the chances are likely fairly low that it will fail in the near future. You could keep his contact information and get him to agree to assist you with submitting for warranty repair if required within the remaining 18 months.

You're probably right. Any problems would've presented themselves by now. He said he travels a lot for work so it hasn't been getting used, and that it was on a "fan-cooled audio stand" from day one. Whatever that means.

It likely means he's got it in a dedicated audio component rack (vice the more common TV cabinet) with a dedicated PC-fan to exhaust any hot air away from the AVR (ie. he takes good care of his equipment).

Welp, I'm headed to pick it up now. Hopefully it pans out. Thanks for the advice.
