I had a Harman Kardon AVR 1600 that I use with PSB Alpha B1, C1 and soon to arrive SVS PB12-NSd subwoofer. I used to use HTIB and then opened my eyes to what crap I was hearing and started upgrading my sound system. I am very happy with the speakers but now I am thinking about the receiver.

The sound is good and I honestly have no complaints (except maybe the auto calibrator being crap). If I were to upgrade what is the minimum upgrade that will result in measurable increase of SOUND quality? Note that I am only interested in sound quality. Nothing else matters (up-scaling, zone 2 etc ). I am in a smallish room and the 1600 power is plenty (I keep it at -23db max)

Does a better receiver will be obvious to a non-audiophile like me?
If so what the minimum step change that I have to take to feel the difference?

Another way to look at it is if anyone has both AVR1600 and (high end model of the Harman Kardon) AVR 3600. Does the difference is night and day or it is there but subtle? If the upgrade significant?

Kind of very subjective questions but I hope someone is able to guide me
