Hi, can someone tell me how to tell from the serial number whether the 8801 was made in 2012 or 2014? The serial number of mine starts with 150013 and I wonder if that 13 means 2013.

My S/N is 15001245000162. There have been around 900 sold in the US. Where did you get your 8801?

Life is enjoyable with good quality

I'm fairly certain it wasn't mfr'd in 2014. tongue.gif

I'll ping Marantz to see if there is convention similar (but apparently not the same) to what Denon uses which is the first digit corresponds to the year of mfr and the 2nd/3rd digits to the month (eg. 303xxxxxxxx would be March 2013).

JDSMOOTHIE: I have a question about the FE hub/switch integrated in the AV8801. I have the top port connected to my LAN router and using the next two ports to connect devices (APPLE TV & ROKU).

Can you use the bottom port of the hub? The AV8801 users manual was misleading/confusing: "Connect the router to one of the NETWORK connectors on this unit. Furthermore, do not use more than
2 Ethernet cables when connecting this unit with a router."

Also, a few weeks ago I reported that I was locked out of the web control. You suggested to reset the AV8801 and upload the config file that I saved.

We went on vacation for a couple of weeks and when I returned from vacation, the web control was unlocked. I did not perform the processor reset nor upload the config file. Very strange.

I have a question being that I haven't set everything up yet. If I connect the 8801 to my display via HDMI, and my display has streaming content (YouTube, Vudu, Hulu, etc.) is there a way to get the audio through the system without having another connection form the display to the 8801?

Yes, it supports return audio from display. I haven't tried it but should work.

Okay Marantz 8801 owners, I'm looking at a new pre-pro currently I have an Onkyo Pr-SC885 connected to a Cinenova Grande amp and a 5.1 system with Von Schwiekert speakers and a PSA XS15. I watch movies 70% and listen to Music 30% of the time, I use a PS3 for Blu-ray and streaming Netflix and Hulu. I know I will gain XT32 but am wondering about the Dacs in the 8801 vs. the dacs in the 5509 or the Integra DCh 80.3. The 885 has served me well but it is 5 years old. For those that have switched from an Onkyo or Integra or even a Denon was it well worth the $ for the 8801? Any info or feed back would be appreciated! Pulling the trigger on a proceesor I don't want to see it outdated in a couple years.

Thanks

I can tell you this much... I went from Lexicon to the 885 and I hated it. From the 885 I went to the AV8003, AV7005 and AV8801 and all Marantz units were a most definite step up from the 885. The 8801 will be a major step up and as far as I know with XT32, 4k, 11.2 is as much future proof as you can imagine. We all know that in a few years something knew will come out but it's doubtful it will be worthwhile upgrading for.

I can answer this without hestitation after owning a d2 and then upgrading to the d2v. This Marantz is a gem and I do not miss my d2v one bit. I loved the sound coming from the d2v but in my opinion the dacs on the marantz trump it. I am hearing sounds I never heard even from my anthem. Keep in mind I am no expert and this is just my opinion. I was skeptical to move to another processor however the features lured me to take a risk. I havent even begun to use the unit for its features yet!! The best processor I have ever owned is all I can say and glad to be onboard!! I also demoed a integra 80.3 before trying the Marantz. To me it lacked depth perhaps I was spoiled from having an anthem so long. That changed when I brought this (av8801) into my media room.

Read my response and I think that may give you my experience and opinion...Take it for what it is worth. A lot of factors could come into play..speakers...room acoustics and your own perception. In the end I think you would be pleased.

Set the HDMI-CEC (eg. Anynet+, VieraLink, Braviasync, etc.) setting on the TV to ON and set the TV audio to "external speakers" or "home theater speakers" and set the HDMI Control setting on the 8801 to ON as well. Also make sure the cable output from the 8801 is connected to the HDMI(ARC) input on the TV as there is generally only one HDMI jack designated as the ARC input.

It is indeed somewhat misleading, but you should be able to use the 4th port for a 3rd device.

The 8801 support ARC (audio return channel) so the question has to be does the display support ARC?

Thanks, bought earlier this month in Canada. It came with FW number that ends in 2484. It really doesn't matter, any known bugs from those made at launch time should have been fixed when updated to the latest version, just curious if the SN tells the story, that's all.

AFAIK, if the TV has streaming content then it will generally support ARC.

Re: The "Dialog Enhancer" feature
I asked this question a few days back. but no one replied...

Ha! - now I know why I noticed zero difference with 'Dialog Enhancer' turned on to 'Low' last night! Because for whatever reason, it DOESN'T STAY on.

I went back into the menu to look last night, and its showing 'Off' again.
So I set it back to 'Low', then checked again later and its showing 'Off' again...
Does anyone know why the AV8801 it won't hold onto this setting???
Is there some hidden 'save' function I'm not aware of?
It doesn't do this with any other settings...

Anyone else had this experiance with the AV8801?

I have the same problem. My current processor is an Onkyo pr-sc 5508. I have a dedicated HT and the Onkyo is the only processor I heard playing in there. To me, it sounds good. But...I'm sure my HT can sound still better if I would upgrade the processor.

I was looking at the JBL SDP-40HD (lexicon 12hd) and the Marantz 8801. I'm looking for the best SQ possible. My Config is 7.1 so don't need extra channels and I'm using Klipsch THX Ultra 2 speakers.

What would be the best choice????

I'm not so sure Audyssey's dynamic EQ are per input. Does anyone know this for sure?

The JBL and the Lexicon that you mention, are in a totally different price category than the 8801. The 8801 is considered by many to be the best processor ever produced at it's price point.

Ok, the Marantz maybe best at it's pricepoint but what if you leave that aside and only look at the SQ.
A second hand JBL/Lexicon and a new Marantz is about same in price, so?

The JBL is HDMI 1.3: the 8801 is HDMI 1.4: this could make a big difference in how it plays with other, newer gear

I had a Lexicon MC-12 for several years and I think the 8801 sounds better, but that is just my opinion

I had a Lexicon MC-12 for several years and I think the 8801 sounds better, but that is just my opinion

Thanks for your reply!

I'm using the Oppo -93 as a blu ray player. 1 HDMI is going to my processor and the other HDMI is going strait to my projector.

A second hand JBL/Lexicon and a new Marantz is about same in price, so?

sound is subjective to the source and the ears listening to it. Further it depends on the room it is being played in. I have stated my opinion on this processor as well. Your best bet is to do an audition of it in your home. That is what I did.

The 8801 will be a major step up and as far as I know with XT32, 4k, 11.2 is as much future proof as you can imagine. We all know that in a few years something knew will come out but it's doubtful it will be worthwhile upgrading for.

You don't think XT64, 8k and 22.4 would be worth upgrading for? tongue.gif

Come on, you know that they must come up with new and creative ways to separate us from our wallets! wink.gif

I was looking at the JBL SDP-40HD (lexicon 12hd) and the Marantz 8801. I'm looking for the best SQ possible. My Config is 7.1 so don't need extra channels and I'm using Klipsch THX Ultra 2 speakers.

What would be the best choice????

I am not sure the Marantz going to be a noticable improvement.
If you like Audysset XT32 they both have it.
In pure direct, they should be very similar.
That leaves HDAM versus OpAmps. I love the sound of my BDP-105 and it uses OpAmps.

I have never heard the Lexicon, but as a purist, I prefer less processing
There review I read of the lexicon 12hd said it does not process HD sound formats which may be a deal breaker.
That seems a bit out of date.

The Oppo can do the decoding of HD formats and send in LPCM to the JBL/Lexicon.

For me it's just hard to understand that a 3K processor is just as good as a +10K processor, ofcourse the JBL/Lexicon has it's age
but still..............
