I think we are both on the same page here, just discussing two different ways of looking at specs smile.gif Even the AVR's are going to do quite well in stereo mode, but one you step to 2 channel amps, you start running into the same issues, their specs are going to be inflated in most cases for the "both channels driven" numbers as well. Most people look past it and buy the amps anyways, so why be honest right?

Agree, typically inflated, everything I quoted are in relative terms only, but don't forget I was also trying to response to the last question in his #3:

You had already responded so I tried to supplement yours by adding that in 2 channel even the amps would give a little more. Actually I should not have bothered because that 10 to 20% more isn't going to help in practical terms. It is best he turns things down a notch to help save his speakers, amps and most importantly his hearing. Too bad, he said that wasn't an option for him. I hope our back and forth at least add some clarity to the responses he's getting for question#3.

Here is my current solution to the Marantz AV8801 getting up to 126 degress when mounted in my open credenza:

The GELID Solutions Slim 12 UV fan has been wired to the AV8801 rear USB output so it runs slower and is very quiet.
The temp is now 102 F max.

It blows accross the top of the AV8801 and not directly into it so I expect that it will not cause an accumulation of dust.

Once I selected the USB, I had to select the rear USB port and then it worked.
Apparently, they are mutually exclusive.

Gotcha. I'm thinking about one that sits on top of the unit, but they look pretty ugly. But it needs something, definitely gets too warm.

It is ok if you are stacking, I have one.
I took it apart and cut away the mounts and inserted electrical tape to dampen vibration.
It still makes too much noise for my tastes.

You do not need to move much air to reduce the tempurature.

I believe that is by design, which is a good thing for a fan.

My network is not set to always on because I have switches in the neighborhood which should be better than a hub.
Try turning that off to see if it makes a difference.

If it does, that is a weird side-effect.

They are as nice as I've seen. I have 2 5/8" to the next shelf and this fan is approx 1 3/4" thick. That should leave me just enough room. In the one pic I see they have the component sitting on top of the fan, but I don't see how it would work, that fan looks like it blows out the sides of it. Thanks for the link.

That looks like a good solution, but with the top of the AV8801 mostly covered from view (by the shelf above), you could have done what I did - and use two of these fans that sit on top at the rear of the unit and suck hot air up and out of the unit and blow it out the back:
http://www.coolerguys.com/codublfancoc.html
I can't see them unless I get down and look in since I have a few inches of clearance (like your set-up), and they're located near the rear of the AV8801 where the top vents are so they go un-noticed and are very quiet. I haven't measured the actual temperature, but it now stays cool to the touch...

There is about 4 inches above the AV8801 so, unfortunately, you can see the top from any seat.
It does not take much so long at the air does not stagnate above the unit.

I have also ordered a white fan that I think may disappear into the wall.
I have found that white wires are better camouflaged.

Or possibly some of your other zones are accidentally on? When powering down the unit, I have to manually turn zone 2 off as well or parts of the unit will prevent it from completely going into standby.

I saw some chatter about this throughout the thread. But what is the consciousness of the MM8077 vs. a Emotiva series amp.

Thanks all!

the mm8077 runs hot. i need to get one of those coolerguys fan on mine it has shut down on me 3 times. i just put a glass shelf that came with my sunfire tg-3 between the 8801and 8077 seems to have helped. soundwise it sounds nice and smooth i have tinnitus so its better for me than emotiva. emotiva amps make you want to crank the piss out of it, it sounds so good.tongue.gif

Yes 8K will be outstanding, Dolby ATMOS, DTS Multi Dimensional Sound (MDA) and 23.4 have my name on it !

I did the FW update, it said it would take about 45 minutes.

It downloaded the file pretty quick, but now the display on the front panel says "sub 38 minutes" and its been like that for close to an hour.....

eek.gif

Any thoughts?

Hi, your 8801 has shut down 3 times? I don't and wouldn't stack anything on top of the 8801, it runs hot as it is, and I would think it would transfer too much heat to the amp. Not trying to tell you what to do. I have mine side by side with my Sunfire amp and have small floor fans on both, till I figure out which dedicated fans work best, they're are noisy and ugly but work for now.
