Guys I'm having a hard time making a decision and would appreciate some input. My house got hit by lighting and it basically fried my electronics. Having said that, I'm contemplating my replacements and considering at this point the Marantz AV8801 or the Yamaha CX-A5000. I generated this thread and would appreciate any feedback (positive or negative) on owners experiences. Thanks for your time making comments!

Hi, sorry your house got hit by lightning, and I hope no one was hurt. From what I've read so far the Yamaha looks like a good choice. I can tell you the Marantz is a special piece of gear that is very versatile and nimble and I won't be giving mine up for a long time. It does so many things so well I would not even think of replacing it. DTS MA and TrueHD soundtracks on blu ray are nothing short of amazing and it does music equally as well.

Does anyone have issues with the 8801 not picking up blu ray audio? I think it's on dts ma soundtracks...I have no sound most of the time when I fire a movie up. I have to switch inputs back and forth, then it picks it up.

I have an oppo 103 bitstreaming.

This is the only hiccup I have, and it's really bugging me....

Any way it could be the 103 having a problem with certain discs or is it all blu rays?

I would say it's basically all blu ray discs, new and old. I assume a lot of people have 103s so I'm surprised I haven't seen more about it. Maybe I need to experiment with using the split video and audio out and see if that does anything.

Hopefully it's not the 8801, but still under warranty if it is. I'm using one single HDMI to the 8801 from my Oppo 93 with no problems. Good luck and hope it works out.

I don't think it's the av8001. I have it with my oppo and av7005. Doesn't do it with any of my other sources.

I'm also using the 103 bitstreaming and get no audio for the first several seconds as the HDMI handshakes are working themselves out. I never get to see/hear the DTS logo. Curse you HDCP protocol.

I use a Oppo 105 set to bitstream as well but using the split A/V setting with no problems, you may want to try it and also try turning off deep color. I do hear all DTS logos and only couple of disc fire up late but this can be DTS or Dolby True.

The 8801 has Audyssey XT32. Yamaha doesn't. IMO, that would be the deciding factor.

I have an Oppo 95 and had a very similar issue!
It only solved when I splited A/V from the Oppo. No matter if deep color was on or off. Never updated formware for the 8801 and cant update firmware for the Oppo to keep playing ISO. Maybe it could help too.

Sorry for bad english...

Of course.  But the Yamaha has what looks like an effective manual PEQ.

Agreed - except the 'better looks' part IMO.
I really like my '8801, but think the Yamaha is a much better looking piece, as I've never been able to warm up to Marantz's new "port-hole" designs which I don't like...
But hey! - I bought it anyway, and she's staying! rolleyes.gif

I agree about the portal. The prefer the Denon look.

Early reports are the Yamaha runs much cooler.

I'm looking forward to a good review of the new Yamaha. The one I've seen is more of a feature list than a review. I'm sure Kal and Dave's will be thorough. As far as looks go I like the retro port hole look of the Marantz. I'm sure if I had the Yamaha I'd say I like its looks also. Both handsome pieces IMO.

It's just a different perspective.  I am anxious to get things and try them out and it can't be too soon.  OTOH, by the time the review is published, it seems like something from the distant past as I am usually hot on the trail of something else.

Looking from the outside I'm sure most of us have no idea what actually goes into having a pro review published.

Isn't that the truth. An AVR that I reviews back in May just hit the latest magazine edition! Seemed like I wrote it ages ago.
