For 7.1 you should use a hdmi cable from the Oppo to the AV8801, that is the only way to benefit from the Audyssey XT32 as far as I know.

I've read the AV8801 manual and it just not coming to me at all. I figured I'll pot it in here and you expert guys can chime in.

Thanks,

Agreed; past performance is the best indicator of future performance.

The XMC-1 does not appear to support HDMI 2 which is the most recent standard for HDMI. It is behind the curve. Only supporting 7.2 also seems behind the curve.

Pre-pro's fall behind in technology soon enough without starting out behind.

Just curious, when listening to 2 or 2.1 channel music, do you prefer direct/pure direct of steroo with Audyssey in play? I don't believe there is a "right or wrong" answer, just preference or room interaction. I have a relatively dead room with a few absorption panels up and prefer stereo with Audyssey. It expands the sound stage and locks in instrument location.

I can get away with both as well my room is silent with just enough liveliness but could use a few diffusion panels to further balance it out, I mostly use XLR & Pure Direct on the CD input for 2/ch but I do like what Audyssey does and especially with 2.1 for the reasons you noted its kinda hard to refute the imaging and instrument placement along with good bass integration smile.gif

I do recall reading the XMC was delayed to allow them to incorporate HDMI 2.0 boards.

Has anyone noticed any problems with the AV8801 headphone output ?

I just bought the 8801 as upgrade to Denon 4311 used in pre-amp mode

But I have to do do at least half of my viewing-listening thru Headphones

I bought the Store Demo of the 8801 last week and noticed much lower volume on the headphone out than the Denon and even some distortion when I pushed the volume up ( -5 db)

The dealer has just replaced it with a new one and I have not tried it yet but I hope my problem is not shared by this unit

Any headphone problems experienced by others ?

IF there was a general line out that worked with all sourced (hdmi and analog) so that I could connect a headphone amp I would not be so concerned

Thank you for your comments

AV8801 Experience

I have a few months on my AV8801, and to say the least, it is everything I expected and more. Sound quality is fantastic, and I have yet to try out Audessy. Currently running a basic 2-channel system directly driving Linn 350A's, super match with those.

Previously I used a Linn Kinos, and the AV8801 is just as sweet. Two things really worked well and were critical to me. First, the user interface and operation is straight forward, to the point where my wife uses it without any issues - that is a big deal. Second, I have found issues with some manufacturers gear not picking up the first few seconds of digital audio (channel change cut to/from commercials). Big offender was the BDP-105 (and Bryston SP2), my experience is detailed over there, really wanted it to work as a one box Blu-ray and preamp. No issue with the AV-8801!

Nice to have a purchase exceed my expectations - great job Marantz. BTW, bought from JD and AVScience - excellent experience and price.

Welcome aboard, and a nice set up you have too!
As to the cables, no, IMO that won't make a noticeable difference. Monoprice is good, I use Blue Jean Cables with excellent results.
Just get good quality, but not the insane stuff - because as P.T. Barnum once mused...

The Insane Pink Care Bear's Home Theater Set Up:

Marantz AV 8801 Processor, Emotiva XPR-5 Amplifier, Panasonic 65" ST30 Plasma, Yamaha BD-S2900 Blu-ray, Yamaha CDC-697 CD Player, Yamaha TT-500U Turntable, w/Signet TK5e, JBL ES100 Fronts, JBL LC2 Center, JBL ES30 Surrounds & 2 JBL ES250P Subwoofers

There's nothing wrong with the MM7055. If you want to more channels, you can buy a Parasoun A23 for your mains, and use the MM7055 for surrounds.

Last week I was downloading music on my PC and move some folders in the attemp to burn certain tracks.
As of lately when I try to play music on my Marantz 8801 I only see a few folders with the same music, even though my PC shows alot more music in my media player. A month earlier I was able to play all music files seen on my desktop. Did I mess something up last week?

This is the path I'm using.. Network-media server-My computer name is seen PC:....at this time- I then click music..go to albums or artist and see the same folders. I have spent 3 hours trying to figure this out. Like I said, a month ago I was able to listen to my amazon purchased music with no issue. I even tried my OPPO player and see the same music folder as my Marantz.

Any help appreciated
Thanks

Based on the current location of your center speaker, the roll off is occurring at 120Hz so you're definitely not going to want to set it to LARGE. Either re-position it and run Audyssey again or leave it at SMALL/120Hz.
