I believe you now have to be a club member to have a custom user title. Once AVS sorts out your re-subscription snafu you should be able to go in and set it.

Does anyone think that Atmos can be played on the AV8801? like will Marantz release a firmware update?

Thanks

In order for Atmos to work with Audyssey, D&M had to install 4 DSPs on the new 2014 Atmos AVRs and the 8801 only has 3, so no. If you want Atmos, you'll need to get the AV7702, AV8802, or SR7009.

Thanks!

I just got my AV8801 and i don't feel like upgrading anytime soon, already running an 11.3 setup that am happy with, also till the AV8802 gets released by next year and Atmos becomes available on many Blu-ray movies i think we would need around 1.5-2 years till it becomes available everywhere(movies and Avrs).

Take for example, 4K resolution it has been out for 2 years? maybe a little more and still there isn't 1 movie in that resolution.

I think you mean no 4K BD's. There are several 4K movies available. You just have to buy the Sony 4K server to get them.

Very good point. Assuming Marantz will release an AV8803 in the future, it might make sense to skip the first generation.

Hello all.
After reading almost every review online, I decided to order my 8801.
I am upgrading from Emo UMC-200 which by the way is a very good unit but due to lack of REQ I decided to switch to Marantz which every review (consumer or professional) gives it a very high score.
I am hoping to see a considerable difference between UMC-200 and the 8801.

Atmos does not define the number of DSPs -- it does not care. The question is the computing capacity of the system. And that depends on the capability of the individual DSPs. Who knows, maybe HP's future "light-based" processors will do it in a single chip.

It also depends on how DSPs are counted. Some DSP chips are dual core, like TI's DA808 or DA810. Is that one or two DSPs? A pair of those chips can handle Atmos. How that compares to what's inside the 8801 I have no idea.

Hi Roger, I believe the 8801 has 3 DSP: Analog Devices ADSP21487
Obviously it has limited power as it is seen as a reason why the x32t is down Rez to 48Hz which was discussed in the thread late last year / early this year, but sounds like we won't see any upgrade path

Hi Matthew,

Thanks for the info. There was never much doubt that there would not be an upgrade path. CE makers do not load in a lot of extra resources "on spec" as it is just not cost effective.

Now, had the 8801 platform been designed to support XT32 at 96 kHz there might have been some way to reallocate the resources to add Atmos in exchange for 48 kHz (the way PS3 reallocated the Cell chip to add DTS-HD MA after the fact), but that's a moot point for the reason you mentioned.

Sorry for the OT post, but I've been away for a few weeks and I come back and find the format of AVS for web and mobile is all different now and my Gold Club status has gone away. As a fellow owner I follow this 8801 thread but admittedly I don't browse back to "catch-up" when I go off grid due to work travel for extended times. I noticed a few posts above that there are others discussing a subscription snafu? Is this a system wide issue? Do I need to contact anyone? I'm unable to access the Gold member forums to find a moderator I can ask either. I filled out an AVS - Contact Us form this morning and have not heard back yet.

Appreciate any insights.

Mods - go ahead and delete this post for being OT, but please get me in contact with someone who can help.

AVSForum has been sold from the previous owner, Huddler to new owner VerticalScope which has returned to using the vBulletin BB platform used prior to the Huddler purchase in April 2012. You should be able to send a PM to forum member VerticalScope and he should be able to resolve the issue.

Considering using Oppo 105 with AR8801, how is AR8801 surround compared with Oppo? Any feedback is welcomed!

I'm in agreement with you on this. I'm very excited for Atmos but will wait and see what happens with processors and movie titles in the next 1-2 years...by that time lots of stuff should be coming out.

The news releases on the Marantz AV8802 shows 13 outputs for LCR, 2 wides, 4 Surrounds, and 4 height speakers. Also with 2 subwoofer outs. Will all of these be utilized with Atmos output? Seems these discussions and the Dolby Atmos site currently limit to 11 speakers for home use. Is Marantz just taking this one step further?

AFAIK, all D&M Atmos models can be configured to max of 11CH as will the case be with the 8802.

As great as Atmos sounds, I just don't see how to practically implement this. I will not buy new speakers (having 11.2 KEF speakers), and I need to add ceiling speakers for optimal effect? DTS also has a competitive product? There's no way to drive more than 11 channels? No thanks. I'll skip the 1st gen and enjoy my 11.2 on my AV8801 for a while.

In listening to Scott Wilkinson on Leo Laporte, he said that ceiling speakers are not necessary as speakers that are designed specifically for Atmos that are mounted on the walls to send sound vertically up to 16' ceilings are considered to meet the new standard.

But we are off the topic of Marantz 8801

But we are off the topic of Marantz 8801
Scott is hosting Leo's show this weekend and it will be all home theater, all the time

He has invited me to be his guest on Sunday, July 6th, and I'll be in studio for the entire 3 hours show. Be sure to check it out at live.twit.tv from 11am to 2 pm Pacific!
