Check with Audio Advisor. I just received their most recent sale catalog and saw the 8801 for less than 2k. I'm not sure, however, that may have been for a factory refreshed unit.

However, that being said, I would recommend making your last call to AVS before making any audio purchase. They can match or beat any other authorized dealer's pricing.

That is also an option, but Safe and Sound is also authorized and was able to get me to purchase two brand new units at their price.

Did they add a free Denon HEOS Link (MSRP$349) as well which is being offered throughout February with the purchase of mid/upper level Marantz units to promote the new Denon HEOS wireless speakers?

I bought one last night from Dave at Safe and Sound and at the price that they gave me I could care less about the "HEOS LINK"... I'm not doing a HEOS system and I don't care about whole house audio at all I'm not doing spotify or pandora or any of that.

They actually offered me the link for a little bit more money and tried to get me to grab one but I looked it up on Ebay and the links aren't even selling on there for retail so its not like anyone could re-sell it and actually make any money. The link seems like a flop to me..

I think they only have 1 or 2 8801s left now. If you are really interested I'd jump now.

I was aware of that deal but I would not pay a $1 over what I paid for something I'd never use....well maybe a $1 but definitely not $2.

Don't think so. It should be on the original box, if you have that handy.

With Windows 8.1 "Devices and Printers" display the AV8801 should show up in the "Media and Entertainment Devices" section. If you right click on the AV8801 and select properties, the UPnP tab shows the serial number, MAC address, and IP address. I don't know whether this information is easily accessible on earlier versions of Windows.

I did with windows 7 and it showed the information but the serial number I think is from the ethernet board because is very different of the numbers that I used to see that begin with 15...
I could easily see the S/N of my classe gear but it's rare that this marantz have full ethernet connection does not.

I checked and the MAC address is being reported as the serial number for my unit as well. I also checked my SR7009, and the same behavior exists. Whether this is a Windows bug or a Marantz bug would require further analysis. Some of my other media devices indicate serial number not available.

He's correct. Windows cannot "see" past the network interface, hence all you get is the MAC ID / SN of the network card.

Marantz model number, serial number and manufacturing date usually are available over HDMI. They're included in the EDID.

I used Entech's MonInfo to verify this just now.

I have lost sight of why it was important for the OP to retrieve the serial number over the network. Doesn't seem like something that would be important to me.

Ok I know I am beating a dead horse. I posted about this issue some hundreds of posts ago somewhere. But, here is some more info about the issue of hiss from the outputs of the Marantz.

From my listening position about 8-20 feet from my surround speakers, I hear hiss from all the speakers when hooked up directly with XLR cables to my amps. This includes the Crown XLS amps (Pro) or the NAD M27 amplifiers that I just replaced the crowns with.

The Crowns actually have a hiss of their own without the Marantz... which means you have to turn the volume knobs down to 7 or 8 and then tune the final volume in the speaker levels on the marantz. Still, you never get to a point of inaudible hiss. It was getting annoying.

The NAD M27 has a consumer level gain structure on the inputs. This amp based on hypex, running into my 88-92 decibel sensitivity speakers does not hiss AT ALL when not connected to the Marantz.

As soon as you hook up the Marantz 8801 to the NAD M27, you get some serious hiss out of all the speakers in the quiet room which really makes it obvious.

The 8801 clearly has a jacked up gain structure or a silly amount of hiss for an pre-amp of its price range. Folks have been trying to convince me that this is "normal"... I say BS. You can hook an Oppo directly to the amp and there is no hiss. There is NO EXCUSE for Marantz to setup a gain structure where so much noise is apparent. Or perhaps the gain is fine and the output stage basically sucks... which is what the analysis from the folks at "Secrets of Home theater and hifi" show in their technical papers.

I ordered a stack of -10db XLR pads for all the outputs of the 8801. I will need to punch up each channel by +10db which there is room to do, once the PADS are installed. I was previously only using -20db pads for my high sensitivity main speakers... audible hiss out of these speakers is basically expected.

The fact that you get significant hiss out of normal speakers is a design flaw pure and simple. This is not a problem on my brother's pioneer elite or any other pre-pro that I have used. I only wish they had an output gain adjustment switch like pro-equipment often has. Don't get me wrong, when music is blasting, the hiss is not overtly noticable most of the time and the acoustic characteristics of the device are otherwise pretty good. The Marantz was the only pre-pro doing 11 channel DTS neo X at the time also, so it wasn't like I had any other choice. If I went with a company the likes of Classe or something, I would have had to sacrifice DTS neo x the last few years.

There is no wonder that Marantz had to make improvements to the 8802... even the company concedes that there are issues with their output stage. The funny thing is that Marantz makes other high quality stereo products with better performance but somehow botched this particular issue with the 8801.

For those of us using XLR pads, it would actually be helpful if the Audyssey channel levels could go to +/-20db. The current 12db limitation makes tuning options limited if you need to use a -15db XLR pad. I am passing this info to Marantz in hopes that they start taking this more seriously. A flagship product should be able to handle a very wide range of speaker sensitivities and at least sound decent when connected to a default "consumer" gain amplifier. At least they should put some info in their manual about how XLR pads work... I had to get that information from folks around AVS. The remedy would not be obvious to any typical consumer.
My first 8801 was noisier than anything.
I had it replaced, eventually, and the replacement is dead quiet perhaps you got a "bad" one as well.
See if you can borrow another from the dealer or take yours down to the store to see if it still is noisy there.

Album art

I am still in discussions with Marantz over the fact that I am not getting album art when playing back music through the network player.
Is anyone able to view album art when using the player in the Marantz?

This is an excerpt from the manual;

When a WMA (Windows Media Audio), MP3 or MPEG-4 AAC file
includes album art data, the album art can be displayed while the
music files are playing.
• If you use Ver.11 or later of Windows Media Player, the album art for
WMA files can be displayed.
• WMA Lossless files can be played when using a server supporting
transcoding, such as Windows Media Player Ver. 11 or later.

I have confirmed I have media player 11 and I am attempting to playback WMA lossless through the Marantz network player.

Marantz now states that only MP3 audio will display album art, no other audio format will display album art when played through the 8801.
Can anyone view album art when using the 8801 as media player playing anything other than MP3 audio?
Just tried playback with an MP3 file, still no album art.

I don't think he mentioned, but certainly it can be very difficult to get access to the back panel in some configurations.

new owner and very satisfy with my purchase until now, I wondering why so many owners are moving for the 8802 with practically not enough options available in dolby atmos, for now I'm testing in music and movies and very pleased with its performance.

BTW in two channels with music is very close to my CP800 and it is say much of its performance. this kind of performance under 2K is a very smart purchase.

Yeah mainstream brands like marantz are hard to beat in overall value. You really get very little "extra" with a classe or whatever.

11.2 DTS neo X is missing from most other "high end" brands
