Can somebody tell me what this is???

https://www.**************.com/index.php/upgrade-company-products/marantz/44/marantz-sr-6006-hdmi-ver-1-4-a-av-receiver-detail

If I'm reading this correctly, they are selling modified AV8801 that is supposed to have "A Night and Day Difference" In performance and build quality. I've never heard of something like this. Is this all a bunch of hoopla?

The link doesn't work when I post it for some reason. Replace all the ******** to Upgrade Company, but as one word of course. It keeps censoring it when I put it as one word as it is in the link

It's a mod company like ModWright. Similar to the mods available out there for the Oppo. The unit has hardly been out so I wouldn't do this. Besides, I don't know anything about these guys. Seems silly...

I'm assuming they can't be too good since they are blocked on here. Just a quick google search and the first result is from audioholic forums. The moderator on that site, Matt34, had this to say about them. "That guy and his "company" are not welcomed here. He's a disgrace to the community."

I'm about to do some more searching, but it definitely seemed fishy as soon as I started reading it.

Big difference between Modwright and TUC. Do some searching and you will probably want to stay miles away from TUC.

I have their XT-32 mod that goes between the XLR cables, the difference is truly unreal for dialing in my system. The modules are plug and play for the cables and the USB software used to configure them only takes about 20 minutes. It seems like I am in a fully padded recording studio not a crummy room with all sorts of acoustic issues as before. Best money I ever spent since the 8801.

AVS member Chucka was gracious enough to open his Denon 4520 and post some naked pictures of it where we can clearly see the video processor being the Analog Devices ADV8003 (third picture). It also uses an Analog Devices ADV7850 as the video front end (also on third picture). If you look at internal pictures from the 4520 and the 8801, the top three PCBs look pretty much the same on both units. It therefore follows that the 8801 uses the same video processors.

DTS and Audyssey seem to agree more on positioning and priority of Wides before Height. Audyssey indicates Height channels properly implemented contribute more to sense of depth.

I found that in my room putting the high and wide speakers in the corners really expanded my sound stage so that movies with a lot of movement around the screen like that found in the Bot fight scenes in Transformers was enhanced to its maximum. The highs are Salk WOW1s that were custom built to focus the sound 45 degrees to the center of the room and down 22 degrees to the sweet spot. The wides are B&W M1s which all match perfectly with the PL300s. I am currently running an Integra 80.3 so I can hardly wait to get my 8801 connected so I can finally enjoy 11.2 channel sound for movies and watching cable.

I find that the front high speakers add much more than the wides for 9.2 listening in my situation. I like the Dolby II Audessey DSX setting the best for watching video content.

For serious music listening I go direct from my Oppo 95 analog stereo outputs which make for intense flac file or record listening!

I would encourage you to experiment with the placement of your speakers to get what sounds the best to you based on your particular room layout.

Anyone using the AV8001 with a dedicated VP like the Radiance. If so, are you routing video through the AV8801 from the VP as passthrough--or keeping things separate with the video going to the VP and then to the TV?

Also, am I right in assuming--if I remember from earlier threads--that you have to route video through the AV8801 to get on-screen display with whatever you are playing on the TV?

I have a Pioneer BDP-05FD blu ray player and an Onkyo SE PR-SC5508 processor that have both been upgraded by The Upgrade Company. The SE 5508 processor proved to be better than the Marantz AV7005 and the Arcam AV888.

I was very sceptical, especially after seeing some of the forums. The 14 day return policy allowed me to take a risk, and now, 2-3 years later, I'm very happy that I did. At the Positive Feedback review website (positivefeedback dot com), you'll see that a couple of folks have now done reviews of upgraded equipment from The Upgrade Company:

1) When you go to the website, look in the archives for January/February 2012. Francisco Duran has an article on his upgraded Marantz components. I believe he had another article on The Upgrade Company in the 2011 archives - I think it was January/February 2011.

2) Also look in November/December of 2012 for two articles by Chip Stern - one regarding his SE upgraded Oppo 95 and the other an article on David Schulte.

3) If you search on the web, you can find an article by Ed Momkus, a Senior Reviewer for dagogo dot com. He really liked his upgraded Esoteric cd player and transport.

4) Even harder to find was an article by Clement Perry from stereotimes dot com, praising the upgrade to his Reimyo CD player (years ago).

Just got mine in and running the firmware update now. It wouldn't seem to let me use my USB inputs for music without updating the firmware. Not sure if that was user error or something intended. I will add some listening impressions asap.

I did run Audyssey, and it did try to set my mains to large and my surrounds to 60hz. I changed to small and 60hz for the mains and 80hz for the surrounds.

also, has any of you who already have one tried it in a passive Pre-amp mode (letting an external DAC do the processing, and the marantz as a volume controller only)? if so, any thoughts on how it sounded?

Well one step back from the Integra. The USB port only works with Fat32 formatted drives. The Integra worked with NTFS.

I'm thinking about getting rid of my AVP-A1HDCI (A) just upgraded to 3D/Audyssey32. Perfect condition, used for 5 months, 5 months in box waiting for room remodel. Think I'll go 11.2 with the AV8801.

Anyone think this is a good or bad idea?

Ok so the USB playback part of this still needs a little work. Maybe a firmware update can fix it. I got it to work, but it does odd things, like pulling up the folders of a usb drive that I just pulled out instead of what I just put in. Maybe it has some kind of buffer that doesn't clear correctly who knows...

BUT - on to the sound

This is a quick and dirty setup. I ran Audyssey for 5 positions and that was it. No real trying to dial it in, etc...

I would have to say that any difference between the pure sound output, in stereo, on this and my Integra is fairly minimal. I would bet I could not pick them out blind. Tie goes to the newer component of course smile.gif. It is prettier than my Integra. I may at some point hook the Integra back into the system and try with it with someone switching cables as fast as they can just to see if going back to it causes me to hear anything different. They both sound great.

Also understand that I am not in the "night and day" difference hyperbole camp. I think most major companies have figured out how to make digital and analog components sound very good, and other than speakers of completely different designs, there is no "night and day" as far as I am concerned.

Maybe my hearing is just bad smile.gif.

So sorry for no huge revelation. I have not watched a Blu Ray movie yet so perhaps I will hear something different there.

Thanks for the post! Interesting first impression. The USB problem definitely sounds like something a firmware update may fix. I'm looking forward to hearing more on the sound after it's completely dialed in. When I went from an Onkyo AVR to my Marantz SR7500 AVR with my Paradigms, I certainly noticed a sound difference. It sounded warmer, fuller, and much smoother/velvety then the Onkyo. Even though the Onkyo was a 500 dollar receiver and the Marantz was 1000 lol.

I think more substantive differences will be with high quality lossless audio material, but then again, we're all different....congrats, good luck with it.

True. If I were forced to say some way its better, then a "fuller" sound might be how I would describe it, but descriptions like "fuller, smoother, velvety" are exactly the kinds of words that seem the most subjective to me. Definitively saying that something sounds fuller would DEFINITELY require an ability to switch seamlessly back and forth between the two with almost no delay. But it is quite possible that the Marantz is slightly better in that regard. I just wouldn't say its a huge difference. I would not lose any sleep if I knew I was "stuck" with the 80.2 smile.gif

I do like that the Marantz plays 192khz files from USB. The Initegra stopped at 96khz. So my 192khz Flac rip of the Hotel California DVD-audio sounded waaaay better on the Marantz. smile.gif
