I'm using; a Denon AVR786, Panasonic plasma TV (TH-50PX50U), Directv DVR. & PS3.
speakers; 4 JBL 6"ceiling, Polk SW10 subwfr, generic center (for now)

installing the above setup for the first time in a new house, although the equipment is not brand new, however in very good working condition.

TV only has 1 HDMI, so other connections have to be RCA type.
This Denon model has no HDMI.
(currently have Directv DVR using the only HDMI)

I cannot seem to get the on screen display for the Denon, in order to see the adjustments I want to make on the various options.
I am able to use the front display on the unit, but it is an agonizing 1 line at a time, not very user-friendly.

I guess I need a basic lesson on how best to connect my components, to utilize all the features the AVR has.
I've had it connected, good w/picture, even able to cycle thru various surround modes, etc. but never able to see the onscreen display, to do any adjusting of speakers, surround preferences, etc...

Any Denon experts out there willing to do a walk thru of basic hook ups for this kind of system ??
I'm not a real beginner, have some tech knowledge, just cant seem to reason this out...

thanks in advance for anyones help.

Dw

The Owner's manual indicates you should get the On Screen Display to the component video monitor output regardless of what analog cable connection is used (composite, S-video, component). If that's not the case, try resetting the microprocessor per the manual's instructions.

well thanks to my inexperience, I now know why.
I was expecting to see the on screen display over-laid on the picture on the TV, no matter what channel or material was broadcast.... but such is not the case.
Its only when TV input is switched to the number of whatever component monitor in circuit you have the denon connected to.
feel like a rube.
cant wait to start dialing in everything.

Now, looking for advice on the auto setup w/included microphone- is it worth it? gimmick? totally essential? any tips?

Also, is there a thread that covers comparing the qualities of Dolby Pro Logic II, to DTS Neo:6, to DTS to ......?
or is it all dependent on your individual setup, environment, preferences..?
any tips or tricks associated with these that people have shared??
( I am able to connect optical audio from the TV to the unit)

hearfelt thanks again, to whomever can assist....

Although not near as good as the Audyssey Auto Setup on the more current models, the EQ on the 786 will at least do a fair job of setting them up according to your room dynamics.
