You have setup a 7.1 system? Or what?
Say you did setup 7.1. First ensure your speakers are placed as the guideline suggests for 7.1. I would ensure the speakers are all at the correct level via test tones. An SPL meter gives you some idea, otherwise it's your ears and brain to judge.
Play an actual 7.1 movie. There should be some rear surround effects. Problem is, I feel, there's so few 7.1 movies, how to have a good idea of what it sounds like? But at least it gives you some idea.
7.1 via DPL Iix from a 5.1 movie might be subtle. I don't expect dramatic effect. I use it all the time, but don't spend time thinking about it.
Even 5.1 can be pretty subtle I think. I have definitely heard movies which have very little surround sound effects.
