Its the Yamaha RX-V671 under $300.

Thanks for the post. I pulled the trigger as I waffeled long enough on the EE deal to miss out on them.

How good is this deal and would this receiver be the start to a decent system?

I was planning to start researching home audio in a few months, but saw this deal and wanted to see if it is too good to pass up? I'm looking to set up an audio system for the living room in my apartment where I have a tv, xbox, ps3, wii, and a googletv box which changes every few months. :-p

I'll be looking to buy a receiver, speakers, and a sub I imagine. Should I pick this up or wait until I've been able to do some more research?

I would wait until you have decided what speakers you are going with and then select a receiver that will meet your needs.

would this be a decent midrange receiver for a non dedicated 5.1 family room setup? I need a second zone capability for some outdoor deck speakers and some kind of audessey setup capability. I was looking at the Onkyo 809 deal, but this is half the price and I think the 809 is overkill for my needs. Im finding the general opinion on this unit to be quite positive along with the reviews.

Right now i'm running KEF iq90's and likely the 200c center channel once I purchase it. Hadn't picked up a sub yet, but given the room and that it won't be really a dedicated theater, I don't know that the sub EQ is that important to me for this purpose.

How does this compare with the Pioneer VSX-1022-K ? I bought the Pioneer from Newegg (have not gotten it yet) but I am willing to return it if this is better. I mostly watch HTPC (XBMC) and PS3 with a distribution of 75% TV (not live), 15% movies (my own rips or Netflix/Blu-Ray on PS3), and 5% music.

I'm think the Yamaha is a better receiver than the 1022, with the only exception being the lack of Airplay. I think the Yamaha compares more with the 1122-K or last years 1121-K.

I am getting the 671 as well. so does anyone have suggestions for speakers ? I would prefer a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound. there seems to be a deal on best buy klipsch kf 26 and 28 .

So what does one need to buy besides a avr receiver and speakers ...sorry i am a novice. Are wires included in the 5.1 systems ?

Do you think KF 26 would not be a match for avr 671 considering its specs are 125W (8ohms, 0.9% THD)

Rated Output Power (20Hz-20kHz, 2ch driven) 90W (8ohms, 0.09% THD)

where as for KF 26 it is

Peak Power handling 400W
Frequency Response 38Hz - 23kHz Range of sound (low to high) that an audio or video component is capable of reproducing.

I am beginning my journey into hi fi less then a year. I still am trying to learn a lot. I haven't bought a new avr in a few years. klipsch speakers can be a little bright sounding and high pitched in the tweeters. I hear that sometimes yamaha receivers can make brighter speakers even brighter. hopefully the kf26 will work out for you. I haven't heard that many klipsch models sorry. I did hear the klipsch icon model at best buy with the 8 inch woofers in them and they got loud, but I didn't like the tweeter. I don't really like my speakers that bright though. a lot of people love klipsch though. maybe you will like them.

I think that speaker wire is included in the receiver and 5.1 speaker systems. some of the home theater in a box systems don't sound that great though. if you buy the klipsch floorstanding speakers don't forget your two rear channel speakers and center channel. if you like a lot of bass get a powered subwoofer also.

The KF26 has a sensitivity of 97db. Any receiver could easily power these speakers. The Yamaha RX-V671 will have no problems.

The KF26 is a single so you need at least two. Then add a center and surround speakers plus subwoofer.

I would strongly advise you to give the Klipsch a listen before purchase or buy locally if possible. The Klipsch horn tweeter isn't for everyone as they can be bright sounding and fatiguing. If you purchase at Best Buy you have 30 days to return which should be plenty of time to test in your home.

You need speaker wire, none will be provided. if you happen to buy a 5.1 speaker package that comes with wire it'll most likely be thin and cheap and need replacing anyway. You will also need a subwoofer cable.

I buy all my wires at Monoprice.com. Good quality cables/wire at excellent prices.

Speaker wire 14ga, 100ft
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10239&cs_id=1023902&p_id=2791&seq=1&format=2

Subwoofer cable, 12ft
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10236&cs_id=1023603&p_id=2682&seq=1&format=2

Have no idea what else you're connecting but you'll probably need HDMI cables. I generally buy 6ft cables

Audiobuff you need to provide more information. What else would you be connecting to the receiver besides the TV?
Cable/Sat box
Blu Ray/DVD
Gaming device
???

Thanks a lot afrogt and keyboardcat t !
@afrogt

I am just going to plug in TV and a roku box, and a PC(i guess it will not give that high quality audio out).

I love a lot of bass. Don't know if KF 26 will give that output. I am too tired looking for great deals and speaker combination. I guess I will pull the trigger now and buy two KF 26 to pair my v671
On a final note,
Do you think i should go with KF 28 ? The specs are given below

KF 28 vs KF 26
Speaker type 2-way 2-way
Number of Speakers 1 1
Maximum Power Handling 600W 400W
Peak Power handling 600W 400W
Frequency Response 35Hz - 23Hz 38Hz - 23kHz
Tweeter Size 1" 1"
Tweeter Composition Aluminum diaphragm compression driver Aluminum diaphragm compression driver
Woofer 8" 6-1/2"
Connector Type 2 binding posts Dual binding posts
Enclosure Type Bass reflex via front-mounted port MDF
Magnetically Shielded Yes Yes
Sensitivity 98dB 97dB
Impedance 8 ohms 8 ohms

Any recommendations on center and surround speakers and subwoofer for v671 ?

a warning about subwoofer cables audio and hdmi cables. don't let the best buy workers convince you to spend 50 dollars on there brand. you can find hdmi cables and subwoofer cables much cheaper at other places. amazon and newegg should have better deals on cables. I bought my subwoofer cable for 7 dollars at radioshack. i called polk audio while at radioshack and they told the worker what I needed. most powered subwoofers don't come with the cable. I think that they should provide you the cable when you spend several hundred for there subs.

the higher the sound pressure level number the better audiobuff. the fact that afrogt pointed out that the klipsch are 98db is good. some of the lower decibel speakers require more power to play louder. if you wanted just music and a lot of bass I would suggest cerwin vega ve12 or cerwin vega ve15, but I don't think they are the best for home theater. they have more bass then a lot of speakers that I have heard,, but I wish they had better tweeters.

audiobuff i can't stay online today. I unplugged my router and modem twice today and still get kicked off. This happened last year to me during a holiday. I think to many people are trying to connct to cable. when I call they always blame my router but it works other days of the year. I think that it's the internet service providers fault. if you decide to get those klipsch speakers I hope that they work out for you.

I suspect that many great systems started out with far less. ;-)

It shapes up as being a discontinued model ca. $500 receiver that differs little from its successor being sold for $300. It appears to have the usual warranty.

Doesn't matter becasue the offer has been taken down.
