Was in the market for a new receiver, and I noticed in one of the threads that the Pioneer VSX-42 was on sale, so I went to Best Buy and picked it up... Only to discover today that the Denon AVR-1913 was on sale at Fry's. Right now, I'm trying to decide which of the two to return. Does anyone have a suggestion on which one is better of the two?

Don't care about Airplay. Using it for my new HD Cable, PS3 and Xbox360.

Unfortunately, there's not a while lot of information online on the Pioneer VSX-42. I do own a set of Pioneer SP-BS21 bookshelf speakers and may be adding to it as time goes on.

So any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Here's a review of the VSX-42. I'm in a similar boat, though not having a Fry's nearby, my choice is between the Pioneer and a refurbished AVR-1612 for $200. Trying to figure out if the extra features are worth the extra dough...

Unfortunately, that's the only real review I've found online as well. In the meantime, both receivers sit sealed in my box till tuesday, where I'll decide which one to return. If you find something out, please let me know--Like specifically what drove you to the 1612 if you go in that direction.

I found this --

http://receivers.findthebest.com/compare/176-179/Denon-AVR-1913-vs-Pioneer-VSX-42

But it doesn't talk about how they are in actual use. On paper, it would make you think that the Pioneer is slightly better.. But.. it's not in actual use. So.. I'd rather get a consensus..

If I go for the 1612, it'll be because I'm on a budget, this is my very first home theater setup, the Audyssey room correction feature comes obscenely highly recommended, and I really have no need for Airplay/networking/anything more than 5.1/component video upconversion/etc. that the Pioneer offers over the Denon. They're great features, to be sure, but a $70 difference (after tax) between them matters to me right now. The Pioneer does have a two-year warranty, though, and they just might be able to power my Paradigm Mini Monitors a little better than the Denon would.

On the other hand, I'm a tiny bit bitter because I didn't start receiver shopping until *just* after the Denon xx12 models stopped having ridiculous discounts in various stores' clearance sections. 1612s were going for $100, 1712s for $150, 1912s for $200, etc.

Hmm.

What do you mean by handshaking issues?

The salesman at BB said the Pioneer VSX-42 has room correction capacity, maybe it's not Audyssey which is a proprietary brand? Or maybe my guy wasn't totally square, not sure.

Pioneers have MCACC for room correction. In my (admittedly limited) experience, the automatic MCACC settings are overly bright and significant adjustments are required to correct that. I also don't see people raving about MCACC like they do Audyssey.
