The 988 is on the level of the 2809CI and it features the more advanced Audyssey MultEQ XT although the 2309 features Dyn EQ.

could not find many differences that would swing me one way or the other so the 2309CI it is, on account it was cheaper at 200 flat. replacing this 12 year old sony should bring smiles.
