I'm in the market for a pre/pro (or an AVR that I'll just use as a pre/pro) whose primary use will be home theatre (TV and Blu-ray). I really don't anticipate ever needing much beyond 7.1 given the current constraints of the room (...and pocketbook...and wife), but want to be sure that I have both MultEQ XT32/Sub EQ and reasonable video processing.
Thus far I'm looking at:
Integra DHC-80.3 or Onkyo PR-SC5509
Denon 4520CI or Marantz AV8801
Anthem MRX 300/500/700
Clearly a big spectrum of pricing in the above...so I guess my real question is whether I need much more than a TX-NR1010 or MRX500 based on my needs? Any compelling reason to spend the dough on the others if I know I'm not going to get into 9+ channels?
Very true. I would not advise someone to get an Onkyo/Integra until I was certain they had sorted out their problems. I have absolutely no complaints about my Onkyo as far as SQ is concerned. What a disappointment the heat related problems have been! Its why I bought a Denon which was delivered yesterday. I also wouldn't advise anyone to buy a pre-pro or receiver without Audyssey XT32 which pretty much leaves Denon and Marantz.
AFAIK they have. The x09 models haven't shown any significant issues AFAIK and the x10 models will presumably be even better.
EDIT: Actually, I have forgotten what you have, Theresa - is it the 80.3 (which is the same as my 5509)? If so, then that gives lie to my assertion here.
I have the 5508. Its good news that they've fixed the heat related problems as they are quality units in every other way. Now if I could get it replaced by Onkyo with a 5509, not likely I admit. Its been reported that they won't replace a unit with a newer one until it's been repaired three times.
Ah yes, of course. Sorry about that temporary brainfade... my 5509 has been entirely reliable so far (knock on wood).
Yes but that is totally consistent with the Beginning Of The End as reported by so many on the x08s. It will get worse, with random source switching etc and then loss of all sound which will come back after a power cycle, followed by total failure. The good news is that Onkyo have stepped up to the plate and are fixing them without hassle.
Well that pretty much takes those out. I agree that XT32 or ARC is a requirement, which means I'm still stuck with that first list.
May not be able to beat the MRX or TX-NR1010 for the money.
Dumb question, but I assume with nearly any of these you can use the pre-outs and the amps in combination (i.e. pre-outs for front stage and AVR for surrounds), yes?
Cool. Question then is should I spend 70% more on a 4520CI or TX-NR5010 versus a MRX 300/500/700 or TX-NR1010. Tough.
Upside on the Onkyos is that they have superior video processing; upside on Denon is the 4K passthrough and presumed SQ.
