Nowhere on any site does it mention it has class D amps... There are several reviews on the Sony and they do not mention it. Even Sony's site have no statement about it being class D. A friend of mine works at Sony repairing their products and he says it definitely is a standard class AB design....

Sony used to have Class D amps (STR-DA9000ES and the STR-DA7100ES) nine years ago but gave them up because of digital noise issues and of some negative reviews on their "cold" sound. They were unique because while they were digital amps, they still used conventional power supplies instead of switching power supplies.

If it's not a BIG screen, it's not a theater...

As you state, nowhere does Sony list what they are...

And, according to Sony support - they are class D...

So, the 5800 is definitely an A/B...?

I am just trying to convey the fact that I have someone from Sony support telling everyone that the 5800 has class D amps - and then you stating that a friend of yours is stating that it has class A/B amps...

Since there is no documentation, anywhere it seems - am I not right in questioning which answer is right?

Believe me - I would very much like to believe that they are A/B!

:)

Hey Jon S what island are you calling home? Raised on Oahu but Kauai is home now for the past ten years. Not much, actually no way of demoing any type of HT equipment on this island.

Quick question. Is there a way to set the listening (Movie, Music, Party, Night) to automatically change the speakers from "large" (full range no sub) for music to "small" 80hz crossover for movies? I currently go into the GUI and manually change the speaker settings to what I want to do.

I live on O'ahu... There is no way to set the Sony to change the crossover automatically in different modes...

Bummer. Oh well, it isn't that much of a big deal to change when listening to 2ch music. What I really need is a dedicated music "only" set up.

I do love this amp so far for my main set up. It seems to work the best (in my set up) compared to previous brands (Onkyo, Denon, Pioneer of many models). The room correction also works very fast and has integrated my two subs nicely with the front stage. It also seems to bring out more details than the other AVRs. Audyssey always seemed to make the lower end a bit to boomy and muddy. MCACC left the lower end a bit thin.

The little things I miss are; volume display and Dynamic Volume.

Depending on where you live on Oahu, it must be pretty hot these past few days no? I haven't been back on island for about seven years. The traffic and city got me all worked up the last time I went home to visit the family and friends.

@Elxan Aqayev,
You've invested a lot of money in that Oppo. If it was me, I wouldn't put it on top of the AVR. I have this AVR and it generates lots of heat. You have no clearance so it's going to bake your Oppo. I have a BDP-103 and I keep both on their own shelf. If you can get a riser or shelf that will lift the Oppo at least 4 inches that would help.

Hi!
Yes. you are right. I know. that I not correctly put devices. But I have no other place. where I could put my devices. And for my child. I put my devices as it is possible above. that my child couldn't touch them :-)

So when we use the 2ch button to listen to stereo (L&R speakers only), does this bypass any speaker setting already set (large or small, crossover points)? I run my speakers small and at 80 for HT, but usually go into the home menu to change the speakers to large (which negates the crossover setting for them). It would be much easier to just push the button.

I read the manual, but couldn't get a answer.

Like another poster has stated. get something to put on each side of your Oppo to elevate it four or five inches. Maybe run some computer fans over the top of the Sony?

1059 firmware has come out for the US version of the STR-DA5800es but not for Australia. Is there a way I can get it? I am using a geo blocker.

In the update notes there is no mention of any updates to the Netflix and Amazon apps which are many generations old. You would think that the apps from the lowly BD-S5200 would been migrated to the top of the range DA5800es

Sony hasn't said anything about supporting Dolby Atmos and am not even sure it's something they can add to current receivers' firmware, but it's worth trying. I had started a thread on Sony's forums asking for Atmos support on the STR-DA5800ES so hopefully it's something that can happen. If you're interested, the more feedback the better, so you can add your +1 or whatever say at the forum thread below.

https://community.sony.com/t5/Home-T...0ES/m-p/404240

I saw an announcement, last month, regarding the ES line and the new models didn't have support for Atmos either.

Anyone have a source that shows the differences between the 5800ES and the new 5800ES2?
