I tried to connect My westen digital usb 2.0 to onkyo receiver HT-R391 .My usb has mp4 and mkv files. How can I play my videos thru home theator THRU My samsung UN40B600 TV 2009 MODEL( doesn't has ARC feuture). My TV has digital optical cable audio o/p and 4 hdmi ports.
My receiver has 1 usb,4 HDMI inputs 1 for each dvd player,VCR/DVR,cable/satelite,game and 2 digital optical i/p s.We can't connect directly to USB to the USB port of receiver as receiver is just receiver and is not a player.
I think there are 2 ways.1)thru HDMI 2)Thru Optical cable. How it works thru HDMI?Please give your suggestions.

Does your TV play video files? If yes, then that is the only option you have right now. Connect the hard drive to the TV, use the TV's media player to play the videos, output sound to the receiver via optical cable.

If your TV doesn't play video files, then you need to buy a device to play them (like a Roku).
