I have a multi-channel amp that I'm currently using for whole-house audio and I want to use the spare channels to drive a speaker in my TV room as well. Most of the channels are fed via a PC with J River and a multi-channel out card and the volume is controlled via J River.

My problem is that I can't figure out how to control the volume from my Directv receiver. There is no lineout volume control on the HDMI output of the Directv unit. That HDMI is going to an HDMI switch from monoprice : http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011002&p_id=5557&seq=1&format=2

This switch has a DAC which allows me to feed the amp via stereo RCA plugs, but it doesnt seem to have a volume control. Is there something that I can either stick in the HDMI line between the HDMI switch and the TV or perhaps between the amp and the speaker to allow me to control volume via IR? The amp does not have IR. Perhaps a pre-amp would do the trick? But the whole point of this setup was to reduce costs and clutter and the preamps I've seen are relatively pricey.

Any suggestions?

I think I know a way to buy an inexpensive preamp with remote.

Older preamps which have analog surround sound technology go very cheap used. Heck, I sold an old. Fosgate one last year for mabe $35.00. There have been a number of similar ones on my local Cragslist prior to and since then.

Two channel folks don't tend to like multichannel preamps so I am sure you could probably find some on the giant auction site if not locally.
