So I've been looking into price points, deals, threads on various forums, etc. etc.

I'm trying to figure out if I would be missing anything magnificent between purchasing the Onkyo TX-NR 709 or the Onkyo TX-NR 809. With the first option, the budget allows for an additional amp like the Onkyo M-282 2 channel for $250. With the second option I may get a slightly better receiver, with the potential to upgrade to an amp later down the road for an additional cost, and without immediate gradification! ;P

I suppose I should talk about my speakers as well...

Front Center: Polk CSi5 (two 6 .5" drivers and tweeter)
Front L/R: Polk RTi12s (3 7" woofers, 2 5.25" mids, and tweeter)
Rear L/R: Polk RTi8s (2 6.5 mids, and tweeter)

Additional Equipment:

Another lower end CSi25 center channel
A pair of bookshelf Polk speakers
A pair of floor standing Polk speakers

Might be able to use with the 7.2 setup, or just use with old receiver being replaced with newer receiver.

Hope I covered most everything,

Adam

Onkyo 503- $229.99
Velodyne VRP-1000- $249.99

Any input and suggestions would be great...not sure how long the sales will be good for and would like to figure this out before the sales are over or they sell out...

Just my opinion, but I would go for the 709 and put the money you save toward a capable subwoofer. That would make the largest impact on your overall sound quality.

Thank you for that advise btinindy, but I already have two powered subs...a Velodine 10" I've had for a while that works nicely, and a brand new Polk 8" in the box still from the Polk RTI12 package deal I just picked up on sale at Frys. Sorry I didn't list my subs in the post on what speakers I have.

I just checked Frys' site and it says that they're in-store purchases only. The store in Wilsonville is out of both of them.

Thanks jim97219, but I'm pretty sure it also says it can be shipped for in store pickup from another store when I hover over their definition of in-store pick up. I just can't have it shipped to my house directly and would have to wait for either model I choose to ship from whichever store does have it.

The 809 is only $457 at Amazon right now. I just picked one up last week when it was $431. So far it's been great.

Thank you piening. I'm definitely interested in the 809, but its about $200 more than the 709. I guess I'm just wondering if the feature difference between the two models is worth the cost difference? I'm sure both would be great, but what would I be missing from the 809 if I got the 709?

I found this:

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1346480/onkyo-709-vs-809

doesn't appear to be a whole lot of difference other than power and video processing

Thanks for that link. I read it all and it's still kind of vague as to what the major differences are other than the minor ones they discussed in that thread. It's kind of sounding like I'm better off looking at getting the 709 and putting the $200 savings toward a nice amplifier to make my RTI12s, RTI8s, and CSi5 really pound! :-)

You'll be lucky to find the NR709 or NR809 at your local Fry's or any store. They've been gone from most stores for 6 months now. The NR717 and NR818 replaced them. Those prices for the xx09 receivers have been that low for many months but nobody has the receivers in stock.

I stopped by Frys in Wilsonville this morning and apparently they have only two other Frys they trade inventory with, and those two don't have them in stock. So it sounds like I get to look into other options still. It was recommended that I look away from Onkyo because of their design/heat issues too by the Frys associate.

Sorry to hear that but thanks for letting me know your experience on that. With regards to old inventory and their website, you'd think they would do a better job than that.

I would get the 709 and then something like the XPA3 to power your front stage.

Who needs 4K?... just go see your optometrist.

This thread was back from late December and early January. Fry's doesn't have any more of the NR709's.
