I was recently given a Onkyo 6.1 HT-R510 set as a hand-me-down.

I was able to only get 2 channels to work, and was wondering why the other 4 channels and subwoofer wont work. i followed all the settings but nothing seems to be getting the other speakers to turn on. A repair shop said it was a sound baord issue, can anyone confirm this or are they scamming me?

Was this also the case for the original owner (ie. only 2 channels) and that's why it was handed down to you? If you have tried resetting the microprocessor (check owner's manual for procedure) and it hasn't resolved the problem, then I'd tend to believe what the repair shop is telling you.

When my uncle gave it to me, everything was working he said. Im assuming its the settings.

Edit: I will check how to reset the micro prosessor.
"To reset the HT-R510 to its factory defaults, turn it on and, while holding down thebutton, press the [STANDBY/ON] button.
“Clear” will appear on the display and the HT-R510 will enter Standby mode." Is this the step?

Only digital works, when i go stereo mode, no sound comes out.

Thank you JDS. I tried that and only 2 speakers are working still. The sub isnt working and the 3 rear and the front center makes no sound. Do you think i should get a different receiver or pay 120$ to fix this current one? When i go surround mode no sound works, only digital mode works.

Depends on your budget, but you're much better served putting the $120 into a more current model.

can you recommend me a model? I want to use the speakers since they are still good, as for the receiver, i guess it is blown.

That would depend on you max budget and what inputs/features you need from the AVR. For the Denon line you can see a comparison of the various current models by reviewing post #2 in the Denon AVR-XX13 Owner's thread linked in my sig. If only using a 5.1 setup, then consider either the 1613 or 1713.
