EDIT: please see post #7 for current advice needed!

Hey all,

Been a long time lurker here and used the site to aid in my TC-P55GT50 purchase. And now, I finally have a question to post!

The question is, which receiver is better in terms of video and audio quality, ease of calibration, accuracy of outputs, etc.: the Pioneer Vsx-1122-K or Denon AVR-1613?

I am well aware that the receivers have a $200-300 difference in their retail prices but the reason I am comparing/considering them is because they are $359 and $349 at the present time, so both are within my budget. I do not want to spend more than ~$350 on a receiver at this point in time because it will be in a small room in my apartment. I will be pairing it with a set of Energy Take Classic satellite speakers until I buy a house and thus, can use floor standing speakers.

I am well aware that these receivers are in a different class and that comparing them is perhaps unusual and hard to do.

I know that there are a lot of features that the Pioneer has that the Denon doesn't, but I keep hearing that Denon has superior sound quality as well as the audition of Audyssey.

I tried searching the forum(s) for a comparison of these receivers but since they are at different price points, I haven't found a comparison.

So, any advice for someone who is new to the home theater scene and is just looking for a good set up for a modest price?

Thanks!

Disclaimer: I will be buying a house within the next few years so I am planning on using this set up in small room or bedroom once I move. I will buy a better receiver and speaker set when that time comes so while I know "buy nice or buy twice" and "you get what you pay for" may apply, this is only a temporary set up.

I prefer Audyssey to the MCACC that Pioneer offers. Also, you can get the Denon 1613 from accessories4less.com for $250. This might help persuade you since you will be getting a more fully featured receiver at a later time.

Thank you for your input! That price is very very attractive but based on resellerratings.com and other forums, it seems like accessories4less.com is a hit or miss experience, with more misses being experienced. Have you ordered from them?

Also, I know that you prefer Audyssey but is MCACC bad? Just wondering if they are both good and functional. Thanks!

Since you're buying Take Classics why don't you just get the HK 1700 from Best Buy for $199? You can get it locally, comes with 2 year warranty and it you don't like it you can take it back.

There's a limit to what Audyssey can do with those little satellites with 3" mid bass drivers.

Thanks for the tip! I tried going to the HK 1700 (I think you are talking about Harman Kardon AVR 1700 Receiver) page on the BB website but it says the page is not available. It shows up on amazon at 380+, but through third party sellers.

I am going to go to BB and check it out tomorrow after work. Hopefully it is available and for that price! Is it a receiver that can hold someone over for three years? Will be mostly using it for airplay and movies (3d included). Thanks!

Any thoughts on the VSX-50 as compared to the VSX-1122-K? All my local best buys were out of the H/K 1700.

Alternatively, I can get the Denon 1712 for $200 or the Marantz SR5006 for $400, both new in box. Your thoughts are appreciated!

The situation had changed so disregard the last post. These are now my receiver options as well as their prices:

Vsx-40 (199.99)
Vsx-50 (212.38 open box - everything included) LEANING TOWARD THIS
Vsx-51 (299.99)
Vsx-52 (399.99)
Vsx-1122-k (359.99)
Marantz SR5006 (399.99)
Denon 1712 (receiver, remote and power cable only - 165 open box)

These are my speaker options:

Mirage mx 5.1 (299.99)
OR
Energy take classic 5.0 (129.99) with BIC F12 (198)
OR
To either set, I also can add to MartinLogan Motion 10 floorstanding speakers for $200 if you think it will be a good addition.

Which receiver should I get? I don't need wifi, airplay, pandora, smart apps, zone 2 (presently but maybe in future), or Bluetooth. I want the best bang for the buck in terms of longevity and sound.

Also, seeing that the Mirages are VERY nicely priced, are they a better choice the speaker setup #2? They will be used in a relatively small room - approx 12x14.

Thanks for your input!
