I'll admit this is probably a newbie question and is dependent on which AVR you're using. In my case, I've got both a Pioneer SC-25 and a VSX-60.
Basic question is....what are the general recommendations for audio surround mode for various sources such as:
XBOX 360 games
Apple TV movies
Do AVRs like this typically select the appropriate mode automatically, or is it something the user needs to specify depending on what the source is? There's also the question of THX, etc... If anyone has the best combination of settings for these sources, it'd be greatly appreciated
If the source is already discrete 5.1, no surround mode is needed. If it's stereo, then use the one that sounds better to you. I am partial to PLII Music mode with 2 channel sources. With most AVRs, you need to define the mode you want to use with each type of input. Once defined, the receiver will continue to use that mode until you change it.
