I am in "love" with the 645. It just rocked; used it almost everyday. I had it set up perfectly, the bass management was a joy to use. My velodyne sub, coupled with logic7, and Athena speakers (on the bright side); just worked beautifully.

I like the sound from the 3700 which I have now, but in 7.1 it doesn't deliver the clear sound at higher volumes. In terms of distortion free (loud) the 645 is still my fav.

I also sincerely believe that as AVR's get more complex features (video processing, Sound processing, etc...) that the units become less reliable. The industry does produce power amplifiers but they are expensive. Maybe its time for the industry to consider producing high quality, powerful, amplifiers and accompanying processors targeting audiophiles but at a more reasonable cost.

I currently own a harman kardon avr7200 I purchased 13 years ago. It has no hdmi, room correction. It have all the harman kardon proprietary sounds, a 7.1 analog imput & output, a torroidal transformer, a true 100 Γ— 7 watts per which are conservative specs, a weighs a back braking 61lb. The industry once made high quality receivers at reasonable cost.u

One of my favorite HK features is the Graphical Speaker Display on the front that shows speaker setup. Can't tell from Hk website photos if this is still a feature.

Nope... Gone. 😑
Vanished after the California AVR team was terminated and the AVR product development function exported to China...
Was a great feature & info tool..
a. Showed speaker size
b. Showed # of speakers
c. Showed # of channels in the encoded native stream

Just my $0.05... πŸ‘πŸ˜‰

Why would a feature like that that is already developed and implemented on an AVR be yanked. I do definitely miss that feature, as I'm sure many other do/will. My 354 had it, which models were the first to have it dropped? I don't think the x650 I believe did not have it also.

70" Sharp

Harman Kardon 3700

Klipsch Rb-51 II's

Klipsch Rc-52 II

My 1600 doesn't have it.

My 1999 non HDMI sony had something similar. It was nice.

As I have posted multiple many, many times...
The marketing direction of Harman/Kardon AVRs, their features, technologies and electrical performance specifications have had major shifts as in 2009 the USA AVR development team was terminated and this task was moved to China and a new management team was inserted....
What many consumer are unaware of is, How many 1st innovations HK introduced into their AVRs..
Here is a short list..
a. 1st AVR automated software for speaker setup
b. 1st AVR with 1394
c. 1st AVR with Dolby Headphone
d. 1st AVR with Dolby Volume
e. 1st AVR with satellite radio interface
f. 1st AVR with iPhone/iPod interface for audio and video
g. 1st AVR with multiple x-over settings for each speaker
h. 1st AVR with front panel digital in/out capability
i. 1st AVR to include a Harmony unversal remote control
j. 1st AVR to include a 2nd remote control for Zone 2
k. 1st AVR to include video upscaling
l. 1st AVR to implement an HD GUI
m. 1st AVR to implement a full-process open ended audio post-processor (Logic 7)

Regarding the front panel display for speaker icons, this was a major breakthrough when introduced 1st by HK in the AVR 7000 in 2001. And then was copied widely by the competition, note that later this was dropped by the new AVR team as they wanted to reduce front panel clutter.. When in fact this provided incredible incoming audio digital stream and loudspeaker configuration info to the user....

But as Dyan sang many years back.. "The Times Are A Changin"

Just my $0.05... πŸ‘πŸ˜‰

The removal of the speaker icons started with the x600 series and even the avr 7550hd doesn't have them either!

Not so fast... rolleyes.gif
Look closely at the mentioned models, and you will see within the FL display the outline of the Speaker icons..
The difference is the icons were there, but they were just not illuminated...

That is true for 7550, not for the 3600 (just checked).

Does that mean the 7550 was last American designed HK AVR?

I just spent almost a day going through this thread. WHY? Because my 7550 (which I loved) is on it's way back to Harman. I got it 5/2013 as a replacement for a horrible 3650 I paid just shy of a grand for. I quoted Mr. Code because I went to the 3650 from a perfectly running 6+ year old 645 which had the functional speaker pictogram & can verify the facility for it IS on the 7550.

The 7550 from day 3 would shut down (but turn right on) once a month, this increased to 2x a month, 3x etc. It was now taking 6-12 cycles every time I turned it on to stay on.

I contacted the U.S. based high level CSR at HK that did the 3650 exchange via email in late January & never got a response, I called the 800 # and after 40 minutes on hold 2 times (going through India both times) finally got to a guy that said he was the lone U.S. based representative & that there was a 2+ week backlog. (why is that my problem)?

He said my only option was to ship the 7550 to Florida. I felt that was unreasonable due to the 8-16 WEEK quoted turnaround. I called Northridge, (the corp office) and left a message in a VM (still unresponded to over a month later) and called back the next day finally getting the person that arranged a 3700 replacement which I will have Tuesday per UPS tracking.

After reading this thread I am afraid, very afraid.

Harman has gone to crap in the last "few" years...

Β

And, to a much lesser extent, so have many others...

Β

Only Anthem/Paradigm seem to really care about customer service anymore...

I have had H/K since the mid 80's. I really love Logic 7 and am astounded by how extraordinarily short sighted they appear to be.

I hope the 3700 I get is ok.

I love Logic7 also. Stocked up on HK AVRs before they went HDMI. The 245 I have while it has some HDMI inputs they are only used as a switch and it still has the pre-outs and 7.1 analog inputs. I really enjoy the instant on without delay and no audio dropouts from analog. Being forced to use HDMI and accept all it's inferiorities when I'm not even watching a BD is beyond reason.

.05 deposited to m Code's sig. smile.gif Although I was only trying to back you up. lol

I looked at the 7550's manual for a week before asking the man that has stopped responding to me who's last name starts with a Q why I can see the speaker pictogram but can't get it to light up like on my 645.

I tried Stanford last year only to get routed all over creation & found calling the 818 # eventually got results.

Hopefully the 3700 works as did my units from the 80's 90's & 2000's, I also loved my AVR 7000!!! no HDMIs were it's downfall, it is now the worlds best garage system with a pair of early 80's B&O bookshelves out there.

Many thanks for all your input in all the HK threads Mr. Code!

The 3700 didn't even compare the the 645. Tbh I wasn't impressed with the unit at all. It tried to do a lot of things poorly as opposed to a few things well!

Mr MCode. Since I know you are very knowledgeable on the HK AV Receivers. I would like to ask you does the EZ Set/EQ Equalize bass. and if so, is it a parametric equalizer, and what frequencies does it equalize? The manual doesn't mention anything.
I have ran the ez set/eq after I had HK replace one if the boards (under warranty). It sound alot different than it did before. I actually like it better with the ez set/eq on. The volume now didn't appear to drop after running ez set/eq, it just tamed the bass and smoothed out the peaks. Sounds even better after changing the crossover frequencies and adjusting the levels using an spl meter. I'm happy now. The only distances I had to change were the FL/R and the sub (only by 1-2 feet), the surrounds were spot on.

UPDATE: 26 March
I found my answer to the EZ Set/Eq question on the AVS Forum, and yes, it was answered my MCode.

Β

Exactly why I am leaving Harman behind...

Β

While I will miss Logic 7 - they just don't seem to be concentrating on reference/upper-level components anymore...

Β

My new AVR will either be a Pioneer Elite, Yamaha Aventage, or Sony ES...

Set up the 3700 this morning. That is it light compared to the 7550 is an understatement. It also seems much cheaper in construction.

The first issue I have is my DTV Genie that worked perfectly with the 7550 is stuck on 2 channel stereo on the 3700 all other choices are grey.

I called Harman, got India, explained it was connected by HDMI in & out, that I had done the set EZsetup etc & what my issue was, the first question was how is the FM working ( I do not remember the last time I used FM) & WTF does that have to do with this????

Next she told me to reset the unit. I could have done that without sitting on hold for 20 minutes. She said I needed to speak to L2 & put me on hold for 20 minutes ( I was lucky, last time it was 45)

Tom answered (by his claim the only US based tech) He reiterated the reset or use another input other than the already named CABLE/SAT which is less than ideal.

It is too soon to say but impressed I am not & HK support stinks.

Watched the final scenes of Pacific Rim. I have to admit it sounded very good.

It is nice not having to chanage the TV input (not that I did as my Harmony did it) That is another issue. Changing the set up will be a pita as it is no fun getting it to run APPLE TV.

We'll see what time tells.

Any thoughts on picking up a 2600 vs. a 2700? I don’t need the networking features, airplay, or any of that jive.

Watched Oblivion & Elysium at about 75% volume, both when hitting big peaks (When Kruger was looking for Max & he was hiding under the cart) sent the 3700 into protection (turned off) It was loud but not super loud and my 645 & 7550 handled it drama free.

Anyone else have this?

Not surprising...
Both the 645 and 7550 utilized the dual power supplies that provided higher current capability...
HK AVRs built after 2009 simply do not have the higher current and headroom capability, and when driving lower impedance, full-range loudspeakers can/will shutdown..

Just my $0.05... πŸ‘πŸ˜‰
