I currently have an older Pioneer (VSX-1019AH) which is 7.1 and HDMI 1.3. We recently upgraded to a smart TV from Vizio (I know its not the best, but we're on a buget). As I was setting it up, I noticed a shortcoming in that when I try to use the internet connected functions of the TV, we have no way of playing the sound through the receiver speakers.

The TV has an optical audio out which may work, but I use a fairly basic Harmony remote so I am uncertain that it would work out well using an entirely different "action" for the smart TV functions.

Would I be better off using a newer HDMI 1.4 receiver and having the audio go back from the TV over HDMI (not entirely sure if a switch in "input" on the receiver is necessary for this) or would using the Harmony to play Netflix and other internet functions on the TV and have it set up to use the optical audio out from the TV to the receiver?

Sorry if this post became too in-depth, I am just at a crossroads here. Not sure if I need to replace my receiver or just program my Harmony differently (or get a different Harmony if this one does not have the ability)

Just connect the TV to the receiver via optical. What basic Harmony remote do you have? I've got 3 simple Harmony remotes and I'm sure it would be easy to program this command.

You'd be wasting money buying a new receiver just for this task.

I have a Harmony 520 which is similar to your 550. You can do it no problem.

Plug it in to your computer and add a new activity. You can rename it Smart TV when you're finished.

All you're doing is switching to a different input on the receiver that has the optical input assigned to it. Not much different than adding a CD player or other audio only device.

Your receiver has 2 optical inputs, assign one of them to the AUX input.

Then when you setup your Harmony 550 just have this new activity switch to the AUX input and that's pretty much it.

That worked, except my Harmony doesn't like to make the smart functions work properly. If I use my Vizio supplied remote they work and the sound works perfectly, but with the harmony I can only get the audio source to change.

You can teach your Harmony the Smart TV commands. But, they should be resident already if you've configured it for your Vizio TV model. What commands are missing?
