I just got this unit brand new. And start the YPAO setting. When the sensor tries to detect my left rear speaker, it says it's not connected. So I tighten the +ve and -ve at the rear, and same thing.

Then the next thing I did, I use the THX 2.0 Optimizer Blu-Ray Disc to test my speakers. I go thru that test continuously 5 times. There is audio signal on my rear left speaker, absolutely no problem

So why did the Yamaha not able to sense the rear left speaker? Any1 else have this problem?

Do you have a 5.1 or 7.1 setup? If you only have a 5.1 setup you need need to use the Surround terminals, not the Surround Back.

Make sure you have your speakers plugged into the correct speaker terminals.

I have 5.1 only. So I don't have the mid room speaker, and I set the rear speaker to be very back 1.

You have to understand the rear right is the same setup as the rear left, and the rear right is fine, the yamaha sees it.

surround Back Right and left

I'm pretty sure that's what it should be

No, those are not the correct terminals to use if you only have a 5.1 setup.

You need to use the SURROUND speaker terminals, not SURROUND BACK!

The terminals I have circled in the photo are what you need to use in a 5.1 setup. I am 100% sure of this.

Give it a try and let us know what happens.

Here is the owner's manual in case you don't have it.

Look at page 12 under speaker layout and notice what is checked in the chart under 5.1

Yeah, that is where I was going....as afrogt pointed out, you should be using the Surround L and R. I did the same thing when I first hooked up my RX673. On low volume, it would be fine, but as soon as I turned up volume on the receiver, it would shut down (circuit protection). I called Yamaha and they advised me to use the SL and SR, not the SBR and SBL on a 5.1 system.

good one, that doesn't make any sense. Doesn't 7.1 is the additional of those 2 x SL and SR, as such it would make sense that 5.1 is SBR and SBL.. Anyhoo, at least I know what is causing this. Guys, thank you. What yamaha plans doesn't make any sense to me, but I'll go for it

Its not just Yamaha, every receiver maker uses the Surrounds for 5.1 and Surround Back for 7.1.

I've owned Denon, Marantz, Harman Kardon, Onkyo, Sherwood Newcastle and Yamaha receivers. Its the same on all of them, surrounds for 5.1, surround backs for 7.1.

+1 And, FWIW, it's the way content is created. 5.1 is surrounds (to the side, just like at your local cinema) and 7.1 adds rear surrounds.

my 5.1 is mounted 12 yr. ago. and back then, Klipsch and Sony tells me to mount my rear speaker to the rear, not the side of my wall. So all these years, they have been sitting at the rear.

Also, an unrelated question, and I thought I post this, anyhoo, is there a way to tell if the blu-ray you're playing is boardcasting DTS 3/2 instead of Dolby digital 5.1, even for a brief moment on this Yamaha?
