It has an HDMI out and that is how you access all the menus but it won't show up, also it is really quiet when playing my turntable.
any suggestions? this is my first stereo in the last 15 years.

Before you hit the OSD button on the remote, you have to press the AVR button at the top of the remote. It took me a few minutes to figure that one out. Also, make sure your TV is on the right HDMI input.

Thank you!
Now I can't get airplay to work, it shows the song on the T.V but it's silent except the speaker buzz at higher volumes.
any suggestions?

I wish I could help, but I don't own any Apple products. Have you checked the expanded manual you can download from the HK product page? I would link it, but I am on my phone at the moment and I struggle with the internet on this thing!

Might want to try restarting the Apple TV or even resetting it.

Try hooking it up straight to the TV to see if the cable is good. My Apple TV is pretty sensitive when it comes to the HDMI cable. Unplugging it and plugging it back in sometimes corrects the handshake issue as well as turning my AVR on and off. I have a HK AVR 1600 BTW.

I don't think the OP has an AppleTV. He is probably using the built-in airplay feature of the receiver.

Here's a link to the full manual: http://www.harmankardon.com/images/media/AVR1700_OM_EN-1.pdf

Also, if it is showing the Airplay screen on the television with the song title, but there is no sound, you might want to check the volume on the Airplay device. I recall reading the receiver does not determine the volume, but rather the source device.
