Hey guys I have a question..I just purchased this receiver last week and I finally got the Yamaha v-473 all hooked up. Did the YPAO setup (which was really easy btw) and it looks and sounds pretty damn good...when the volume is cranked.

BUT...One question I have though. Yamaha receivers volume control start at like -80dB and go up to +16.5dB. Compared to my older Yamaha receiver (HTR-5650) which I believe has less power it seems like I have to turn the volume much higher to enjoy movies and tv. On the older receiver I regularly would have the volume at like -40dB on the receiver and with this new one the volume needs to be at around -20dB or higher to enjoy it.

I don't know if its the receiver, if its because of HDMI (older one was hooked via toslink) or what. Either way it makes no sense to me considering I am using the exact same speakers as before. Thoughts? Other than that the only difference is I used YPAO to setup this time instead of my radio shack spl meter.

Check out the setting for the theme for the type of sound played there are about 15 choices which include dolby, 5 channels stereo, several theaters in Europe ect ect.. try to match then compare to what you were playing on old system

regards,
Marty

I wouldn't worry about what the volume setting was on the old receiver vs the new one.

I can tell you on my 673, I usually have it around -25 for movies, running MP in-wall/in-ceiling speakers and even then I'm told it's too loud and to turn it down a bit.

So I turn it down to -25.5.

Anyone have any issues with YPAO and center channel being too low? I think this is the source of the problem. I can't hear the dialogue without cranking it up.

Maybe I should get out my trusty spL meter and see what happens then compared to YPAO?

I have the same issue with the center being too quiet so I cranked it up. YPAO can do whatever it wants with its test tones but with movies, especially when you don't have any sort of audio volume compression on (which I have disabled on both my cable box and Blu-ray), home listening dialog will be too quiet since in the theater, sound effects can (and are supposed to) be earth-shattering when compared to voices.
