So I'd like to take an old receiver and make put it to use. Is there anything that can connect via wifi to my android phone and output music or audio to my receiver? Not bluetooth, range is horrible.

For example take roku. I could buy a roku, hook up just the audio out to my receiver, download the roku app, and control the roku from my phone. Is this a crazy idea but the best solution? I feel like it's a waste not using the video, which is what it's made for, but can any other device do something like this???

There are other ways--using a DLNA controller app to play files from a file server or using an Airplay device. However, notwithstanding its video capabilities, the Roku is a less expensive option than the other two. If you can make the Roku work, I say go for it.
