In other words, I am concerned that the X4000 will wash the incoming signal through its internal DAC for processing, and then use the Denon's DAC for output. Also, what about DTS Neo Music? My understanding is that the front mains are not modified, and the surround channels will merely expand the sound field. Is that untouched as well? I am assuming that each of the DSP modes does its thing in the digital domain... Thanks!
When using other than DIRECT/PURE DIRECT, the AVR's ADCs and DACs are used.

zone 2 thank you

[QUOTE=jdsmoothie;30388858]^^
Prior to running Audyssey, you must ensure the AMP ASSIGN (p. 155 Owner's manual) is set to Zone 2.

amp assign did the trick. thank you. you are always very helpful.

I have a simple question: Denon avr-x1000 or Onkyo tx-sr507?
Which one is the better, and why? Thx for all answers!

So the only difference is the display is turned off to reduce possible noise? Can anyone really hear the difference?

Thanks for the quick response. I don't actually use either one as most of the usage through that box is Airplay, DirecTV, Roku stick (through the Oppo), and a very very very occasional movie so not a lot of critical listening

so i'm having problems with the X4000 unit going into "protection mode" and powering down.

it started the first day i had it, happened just listening to the radio with DefTech BP2006TL connected as front L/R. has also happened watching TV, bluray (PS3), low volume, high volume, and even while running audyssey. sometimes it happens after 5min and in the open air (as it did when running audyssey), and sometimes i can watch multiple movies and it works fine.

i've tried different surge protectors, different outlets in the house, and rewired the fronts with brand new wire and banana plugs. other devices plugged into the same outlet/surge protector do not power down at the same time.

i talked to denon and they said i needed to unplug everything besides the power cord and see if it goes into protection mode again. i'm not really convinced that even if it doesn't there's not something wrong with the unit.

i guess the only other thing i have left to do that i can troubleshoot is hook up some known-good speakers as the fronts and see if it happens again? any other ideas?

Will my AVR-X2000 allow me to run Zones 1 and 2 simultaneously? I ask because I'm thinking of running my fronts from a separate amplifier by using the pre-outs on the rear of the X2000, but the pre-outs are marked "Zone 2".

What I'd like to be able to do is have a separate amplifier for my front two speakers, and run the center and surrounds from the AVR for a 5.1 system. Can this be done (easily), and how?

Ok, next I would try turning off the video overlay / processing in the Denon. I forget the exact setting, but jd probably knows.

Philm, that sounds like a bad idea to me, but yes, there would be no problem doing that. Just set Z2 to the same source as Z1. Audessey and all of that goes right out the window of course. And keeping the levels even also poses a challenge.

Is this due to there possibly being no processing (levels, x-overs, etc.) of the pre-out other than volume? Or is there another reason why this might pose a challenge?

Well, it's a completely independent amp with it's own volume control. Modulating the pre-amp out is a terrible way to control volume. SNR would be terrible over most of the band. I envision some kind of mixing board for your scenario where you manually raise/lower the levels together on each device with sliders. Not really, but you get the picture.

Rats! Well, is there any other somewhat easy (on the wallet) way to get an amp on my front LR integrated with the rest of my 5.1 system, or, sans that mixing board idea, am I stuck going all separates?

Probably a stupid question, but here it goes ... can you control the individual speaker volume on the x4000? If so how? I would like the surround speakers louder, but can't seem to find it in the menu. Thanks

Yes, with IP commands there are discrete volume controls for all channels. I use irule app on phones and tablets for control and have access to what you need.

Not sure. I got a floor model with no remote or manual so only use irule and am just digging in to what the x4000 can do.

Irule is great though. It is a deep pit however, I use it to control lights, AV systems in 4 rooms, music throughout the house and patio, etc.

I know, it is insane...I bought mine on Amazon Warehouse deals just a couple of months ago for $230 + tax and thought I was getting a steal. It showed up looking like it had never been opened. I love my X1000 for the money.

Hello Ladies and Gents,

I'm new to this forum and this is my first post here. Unfortunately, I haven't found the answer to the problem I saw today with my Denon X4000 AVR stuff.

I'm running a configuration as follows:
Zone 1 - 5.1 set in living room
Zone 2 - second monitor (from older PC HDMI->DVI converter, speakers run only through a mini-jack in) + external stereo amp with two speakers powered by Zone 2 pre-amp output. External amplifier made by my myself
Zone 3 - master bathroom - stereo speakers powered by the Denon's internal amplifiers from Back Surround.

Now the case is that each zone plays the music from Network sources and everything is fine - zones 2 and 3 play stereo while the zone 1 plays 5.1 sound (All Channels stereo option). But when I try to play my Xbox360, it runs with sound only in Zone1 but Zone2 is only with the video but no sound. When I made at first the connection to Zone 2, the monitor used to play the video and the speakers in Zone 2 played all the sounds from the Xbox. But when I moved the PC monitor from living room (I put it there just for test), in the new location I could only get the video but no sound.
If I run the console and put the output to both zones (1 and 2), I got only the video, but in both zones there is no sound. If I turn off the zone 2, I can get the sound in the zone1, i.e. in the living room.

The weirdest thing is that even my wife noticed that everything worked fine during the tests but now it doesn't. I want to get these stereo speakers and external amp running the audio from Xbox as it was ok at the beginning.

Just FYI, I tried turning the audio options in Xbox to Digital Output and Digital 5.1, and I always rebooted the M$ brick. I also used the setup options in Zone2 to change the HDMI audio to PCM. And none of these have helped.

I have no idea what to do next because I know it was running at the beginning but now it doesn't. Should I make some sort of factory reset in Denon? I think it is something very obvious but I simply can't find the root problem.

P.S.
I'm sorry if I made any language mistakes or my post is not clear. It's Saturday night and I'm a Polish heavy drinker, so...

I have never heard a difference between DIRECT and PURE DIRECT with this receiver or its Denon predecessor in my system--AVR-4310).

For what it's worth, When Audyssey is turned off, I hear no difference between DIRECT and STEREO either.

This will be my first Denon. My last 2 were both Yamaha, which I liked. Prior to that it was 3 Onkyo, which were ok. I Haven't had anything for awhile now and decided to be open to brands this time. When I saw the price on this X1000, I just couldn't pass that up!

The Denon app is terrible. You need DeRemote for iOS.

well my x4000 officially lost the plot tonight.

it went into power protect mode with NOTHING else besides the power cord plugged in, not even an FM antennae. a couple hours later it sh*t the bed 4 times in 20min while watching thomas the train. once with just the center channel attached.

called denon and they said 2-3 weeks if i send it off for repair. i got it from wwstereo, and their customer service wasn't open on weekends. odd...but i guess i'll call monday and see if they can send me a new one.

Hello once again,

I triple checked the configuration in my Denon and I don't see any errors. I use the manual configuration of Audyssey "5.1 ch + Zone 3" so that gives me the pre-amp output in Zone 2. That is assigned to the external power amplifier and I can play there either from my DLNA, Internet radio or FM Tuner. However, I can't get the sound from my HDMI inputs.

Thus, I checked in the setup options the menu of Zone 2 - the audio conversion is set to PCM so that the input sound from HDMI sources should be decoded and pushed to the speakers and pre-amp output. However, I can't get sound there either from Xbox 360 (GAME input) or my satellite receiver (CBL/SAT input). In both cases the sound is played correctly in Main Zone despite of the input sound. It can be either PCM stereo or DTS and it is decoded properly.

But when I turn on the zone 2 and turn on the same input in both zones, there is no sound in any of them. That gives me assumption that there is something wrong with the sound processing within Denon.

Could you please help me identifying the root cause of this lack of sound in Zone 2?

As I note in post 4 of this thread, this is a known issue. If still within the exchange period, replace it.

Thanks for the quick response. I don't actually use either one as most of the usage through that box is Airplay, DirecTV, Roku stick (through the Oppo), and a very very very occasional movie so not a lot of critical listening
Also analog video sources are disabled as well. Also note that both modes disable Audyssey and bass management.
