What is your opinion on both Marantz and Emotiva processors? I have an old Marantz SR18 reciever that I love but I'm looking to upgrade. The new Marantz I heard is not as good as older stuff. I'm debating between the Emotiva XMC-1 or Marantz AV7701/ AV8003(used)? How is the Emotiva? I'm running B&W 600 series with a REL Strata III. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance?

How can anyone objectively answer your question when one of the two is not available?

UMC200 VS. AV8003? I'm trying to understand if Emotiva is at the same level as Marantz or its better. Better meaning sound quality.

I went from a Marantz SR5006 to an Emo UMC-200/XPA-5. I think the Emo definitely sounds better with music. Then again, I'm comparing it to Marantz's entry level receiver. The Outlaw 975 is another option as well. I'm not sure with Outlaw, but Emo has a 30 day return policy where you just pay return shipping.

It's these cans! He hates these cans!

Wow, really. Emo vs Marantz? A Marantz entry leval is better than most mid leval brands IMO..hook that xpa 5 to any Marantz and tell me if the emo still sounds better smile.gif

Well the Emotiva pre-pro might be available in 3 months or the end of this year. No way to know. It should be - I hope - a quality product but it will not have all the extra features like 11.2 channel and such that current pre-pros and receivers offer. It may not even have room correction when released for a while as Emotiva is still sorting out the TACT software. You have many options available to you. There are several higher end receivers that make excellent pre-pros as well and will have every available decoding and feature for good prices and they give you the availability of extra amp channels if you need them for wides, heights or whatever you may add in the future without needing another external amp.

The AV8003 is a discontinued prepro with the AV7701 and AV8801 being current units from Marantz. I would say it depends on the features you desire and your budget. You could give the UMC-200 a try as Emotiva has a 30 return policy. The UMC-200 will not have the features that the AV7701 and the AV8801 have but the prices reflect that. But the UMC-200 might have all the features you need with SQ that you will be happy with. I would wait to order the UMC-200 till Emotiva releases the new FW to correct some issues with it.

You heard the new Marantz is not as good as the older one? I haven't heard that and my 8801 is an amazing pre/pro. Come over to the 8801 thread and see what's being posted, guys are coming off of pre/pro's costing much more and are happy. There have been a few firmware glitches but mines been perfect. I'm not saying the Emo isn't a good product and I'm no Marantz fanboy, there are many good products out there smile.gif
