I took the plunge today when I got an email from NewEgg.com, offering a 6-hour price on the Yamaha 773WA. A great surprise following my recent purchase of a 46" HX850.

But before I take delivery of it, the only other receiver I was considering was the Pioneer VSX-1123. Any idea how those two compare? For starters, the Pioneer appears to be about $599.00, vs the $429 for today's NewEgg price of the 773WA. It seems that the 773WA has a wireless attachment included, whereas I think that's extra on the Pioneer. On the plus side side for the Pioneer, it uses the Marvell Qdeo video processor, which may arguably be better than whatever Yamaha is using.

Anyone else have thoughts?

Hey Johnny, I believe that the Pioneer 1123 is a superior receiver. I own one and i will never change it unless un upgrading to the elite VSX-70. There are a few things why i love it.

-I am an apple guy, icontrol 2013 is just awesome! you get the best out of the 1123.
-has zone 2 with audio and video and Sub for my bedroom.
-the LAN interface works great with my NAS server which has all my music and movies (torrents)

Well in general the menu interface and configurations are awesome.
The Yamaha has better support if you have 4 Ohm speakers and has better independent speakers configuration.
Outside of that, Airplay on the pioneer kicks ass. PC, iphone or iPad.

A Harman-Kardon 1700 is a MUCH better-sounding receiver, and can be purchased for less than $400 if you look around.

IMO every Yamaha receiver has an inadequate power supply and lousy amplifiers, and Pioneer is only marginally better.
