Hi people,

Was wondering of any of you had any ideas if this receiver could drive large speakers like the Mirage OMD 28s. The speakers handle 50-300 watts at 6ohms. Unless I am mistaken, this amp can do 165Wpc at 6ohms. Thoughts?

I can't say for sure one way or the others. I just wanted to clarify the power rating Sony gives for this receiver is 165W x 7 @ 8 ohms 1kHz 0.9% THD 1ch. driven. Hopefully that helps some

STR-DN1040 installed today. First viewing with my Panasonic ST60 and I've noticed that the picture is very dark. This dark picture was never an issue until today. I've always had a vibrant picture with Direct TV box connected directly to TV.

I've read all the posts here and on Sony's support site about HDMI handshake issues and I'm unclear if this is what I've experienced. I purchased the unit about 40 days ago from Best Buy and I have 45 days to return it.

do a few tests rehooking up the direct tv box directly to the tv again and make sure the picture looks better that way, maybe have someone else confirm it for you. see if they notice too.

An out of warranty repair was approved for my Onkyo TX-NR709.

I'm going to return the STR-DN1040 to BestBuy... it has excellent sound quality, and I really love the bluetooth interface, but the transformer Buzz is driving me crazy in no/low audio situations... & I might as well save myself the money associated with a brand new receiver.

Was it the HDMI board on the 709?

Are you using different HDMI inputs on your TV for the SONY and the Direct TV box?

Most often, picture settings on your TV are specific for each HDMI input.

My local repair shop, which was unable to fix it, indicated it was the HDMI board. The actual sympton was that the receive stopped processing audio (it would however, pass-through video to my TV). Just no sound via HDMI or Optical.

Maybe that is why Sony chose to remove BT support in the European version?

Crisis averted. Checked the picture mode on my TV and, for some reason, the setting was on "Standard". I changed it to "Cinema" and it was back to its vibrant picture.
I'm guessing my installer changed it.

Usually SONY REWARDS ( a website used by people like me with SONY Visa capital one credit cards) has sony products for either list price or just OK deals. I get points at 1% of my purchases. So imagine my surprise when I noticed a bunch of SONY audio equipement on massive sales. The 840 was on sale for the equivalent of 275 bucks(inclusive of taxes) and I had my mind set on buying that model but my procrastination for a couple of days led me to discover a massive price cut on the 1040. I got the 1040 for the equivalent of 380 bucks(355 plus taxes included in that). Actually it got better as SONY CARD was offerering a 2000 points ($20 equivalent) on purchases made in that time frame. So I got it for 360 total. THe day after I made my order, it went back up in the 500s.

I am not a huge SONY audio guy, but I couldn't pass up on that deal. And this was a good opportunity to redeem some SONY points for non overpriced stuff.

now I gotta go through this thread and get suggestions for midpriced speakers to complete this setup. (My budget is only around $2000-$2500 for speakers in a medium sized living room). My TV is a Panasonic 65VT50.

I couldn't be happier with my RSL 5.1 surround setup to go along with my DN1040. I'm coming from an Onkyo 805 receiver with SVSound PB-10 sub with SBS-01 satellites. My new RSL's sound seriously absolutely amazing. The clarity of the speakers & tightness of the sub are far beyond what I was getting from SVSound. Lands at $2075 shipped for the set.

Thanks cleeve. I talked to those guys. Very helpful. I might settle for the cheaper rears in their collection and that brings the price down to 1700 approximately.

Until I purchase, I have two OK front floorstanding speakers and two cheapo small rear speakers. Is it best to run this in stereo or is there a two front and two rear setup I can run temporarily? What sound mode is best for such a 4 speaker setup? Or is it best just to go with regular 2 channel stereo until I upgrade my speakers.

Apologies if this has already been covered but a quick search didn't provide an answer (maybe I'm just searching for the wrong thing...)...

Loving my dn1040!  Does anyone know if you can run an audio source separate from a video source?  Example, I'd like to play a game while listening to my own music, or a hockey game on TV with my music instead of the TV's audio...any idea?

Seems like the answer is "no" as pressing an input button focuses everything to that input, but just wanted to see if anyone knew otherwise.

Thanks!

the answer i always read was no. my old sony could do it but i had to play with it and sort of trick the reciever into doing it, havent really tried with my 1040. but the 2nd option that technically would allow this, is to unhook your cable box from the reciever and hook it directly to your tv and watch tv that way, then your reciever can be used for music. this would work exactly hte same just have to do 3minutes of manual work.

Interesting, thanks for the response.  I figured that was the case.  Minor bummer but not the hugest of deals.  I wonder if that's something that could be updated with a firmware update...

I need a receiver to use as a video switch and transcode both audio and video to HDMI. I need to connect a Wii (component) and an older Xbox 360 (component) to the receiver and output HDMI to my display. Can I do this with this this Sony? I've read thru the manual and this thread and I pretty sure I send the video upconverted to HDMI out but I wasnt sure if the audio will go out via HDMI also from the composite Wii audio and the digital Xbox 360 audio.

I have a tiled over brick fireplace wall-mounted display with a single HDMI running thru the tile and thru the floor. I cannot run any other cables to the display. Will this do what I need? TIA

Did you check to see if you maybe had a stray speaker wire that was touching the wrong speaker post? That is often the culprit.

Hello,

I am having some trouble and was wondering if anyone out there can shed some light on it.

My STR-DN1040 produces great sound when watching movies from my BD player or my Direct TV cable box, however when I watch movies via Amazon no sounds comes out of my Home Theater speakers, only the TV speakers (Vizio E601i-A3E).

I'm using all HDMI cables.

Here is the route of my cables:

TV to AV Receiver: HDMI 1 (ARC on TV) to OUT A (ARC) on receiver
Cable box to Receiver: HDMI on reveiver to SATCATV imput/output on receiver
BD player: HDMI on back of player to BD imput/output on receiver

On page 28 of the STR DN-1040 manual it has the set up for connecting your TV. In the first section on page 29 it talks about the connections (ARC) and to set the "Control for HDMI" to "On" in the 1040's settings... which I did.

Is there something obvious that I'm not doing or doing incorrectly?

Thanks for your time,

p.

Hi pieper53, also set Vizio HDMI Control (CEC) to "On", TV Speakers to "Off' and then power off and on the TV and receiver.

This is a 2013 model that came out before the 2.0 spec was official. It does not have the hardware for HDMI 2.0. The 2014 replacement STR-DN1050 would support HDMI 2.0 (when released).
the '1040 supports HDMI 1.4 with 4Kpass-through and up convert with 24fps only.

JChin,

You are a hero and I love you!

Thank you. I was using on-line support with Sony, reviewed the manual, and many google searches but couldn't find out how to turn the HDMI control to "on". Thank you!

I've just got my 1040 setup and I'm still a little clueless on all the features and connections and I'm wondering if you guys can give me a helping hand.

My situation is that I have various consoles and a BD player connected via HDMI to the receiver and via HDMI to my TV. I'm about to order a Gaming PC which I'll run through the receiver also. I have a 5.1 speaker setup and I'll frequently be gaming using the speakers but there will be times that I'll more that likely want to wear headphones.

I'm looking at the following wireless headset which has the following connections on the base station.. See link

http://www.hifivision.com/surround-amplifiers-receivers/22258-connecting-razer-chimaera-avr-possible.html

This is where my confusion creeps in.... I assume that headphones used in the traditional sense would be connected to the socket at the front of the AV Receiver but these headphones also have a mic. All the guides on the website mention connection to either an Xbox or PC. This is where my knowledge fails me and I really have no clue what will work or not.

All I basically want is to make sure that when I connect these headphone that my mic and headset work with the AV Receiver and I can game to the early hours and not find that head phones work just fine but unfortunately so do the speakers at the same time smile.gif

I'm sure it's simple, so maybe you can help me out??

Thanks

Here's another article suggesting an HDMI 2.0 update is/was coming:

"Sony, on the other hand, said five 2013 AVRs will be upgradable, via their network connection, to HDMI 2.0. Those models are the STR-DN840, STRDN1040, STR-DA2800ES, STR-DA5800ES and STRDA1800ES. The updates for the ES series models are expected to be available in October. For the DN840 and DN1040, the updates will be available later in the year but before the end of the year, a spokesman said."

I don't see an end-of-year F/W update, so maybe 2.0 will be in the next release. Perhaps it is already present and tested in draft state and they just need to tweak it and enable it.
