Hi,

I have already bought 9.1 speakers for home theatre with intention to use the additional 2 speakers for either front height or front width.

These are atlantic technology 2200's with dipoles/bipoles for rears and sides and monopole for all the rest.

What receiver or receiver plus amplifier setup is recommended while keeping the budget below 1500 USD.

Thanks
Hussain

The Yamaha RX-a3010 receiver which was last years model is still available through Amazon and will match your budget. It can power 9 speakers by itself and has amp outputs for Front Presence (which I suggest) and rear presence. I am running this unit with all 9 channels powered by ATI AT2000 series amps (because I allready had the amps from my previous setup), but in the wifes audio room which also has a yamaha RX-A3010 she does run 7 channels with front presence without issue.

Yamaha CX-A5000, ATI AT 2007 Amp (7X200W), ATI AT 2004 Amp (4X200W)Klipsch RF 63's - Main, RB 61's - Front heights, RC-62 - Center, RS-62's - Surround, RS-52's - Rear Surround, 2 Rythmik DS-1510 DIY Subwoofers (With PEQ600XLR3 Amp) each connected with Antimode 8033S-II, Oppo BDP-95, MMF-7.1, Project Phono Box RS, XBox 360, XBox One

Denon's 4311CI (few years old) is 9.2 and the new X4000 is 7.2 but can be expanded to 9.2 by adding a 2CH amp or another AVR; either of which can be had under your budget.

See if your local Costco has the Pioneer 1522. For $599 you can't beat it.

Are there any 7.1 receivers which can be expanded to 9.1. I particularly like the idea of having a separate amplifier for front 3 speakers

Never heard of one. Just get a 9.1 avr that has pre outs, that way you can run a seperate power amp.

Compare prices versus features (I did), then call your local Costco to find out which nearby store has the Pioneer SC 1522k in stock for $599, drive there and get it. I did. I'm very happy.

Why go out to a movie theater?
