Hi. I need a new receiver and am having trouble deciding between:

VSX-70:

Pro's:
4k Upscale
does 7.1 with high speakers
new model

Con's:
No class D amps

SC-65:

Pro's:
9 channels if I ever wanted to do that
THX
4k pass through
class D amps
Only 250 USD more

Con's:
It's a year old
No 4k Upscale

what do you guys think? I am leaning toward the sc-65 as I don't plan on getting a 4k TV for a couple years, and by then I would think there would be several that upscale internally.

Thoughts?

I like the class D amps so my choice would be the 65 others may chime in with their opinion another point about 9 channels is you can have 7.1 in the main room and a powered zone in stereo outside or another room just a thought.

I did this exercise last year. I had the VSX-60, SC-61 and then a yr old SC-55. (the 65 was more than i wanted to spend)

If you are into the ipad/iphone app (which is a major advantage PIO has had over everyone else) than check to see what version each unit runs. Unfortunately Pioneer keep a version for every release year and does not update them. The 55 runs icontrol av2, the 61 and 60 run av2012. The new models most likely run 2013 which I would bet have some minor but potentially useful updates. The 2012 version was a nice improvement over the av2.

Build quality, the SCs (not including the 61) have much better build quality than the VSX models. The SC-55 has all metal casing, and weighs substantially more than the 61.

THX, as you noted, the 70 is not THX certified. I have found that the THX loudness plus is the best way to get dynamic sound at reasonable volumes with Pioneers. I use this all the time and find it superior to Pioneers ALC alternative.

The vsx are great sounding receivers, but are not in the same league as the d3 powered SCs. If you are running/resolving speakers the difference will be readily apparent.

Ultimately, the build quality of the 55 won me over. The 65 has the same build and will really feel like a well built high end product.

Isn't 4k upscaling worthless on these receivers as they only do 4k at 30Hz? I bought a SC-1222 from Newegg about 3 months ago and have to say that it sounds better than the VSX-21txh it replaced (yes, I know the SC-1222 is not a full Elite receiver). I think the D3 amps were worth it.

EDIT: Can't the SC-61 (SC-1522) be found at Costco for $599?

Thanks guys. I took a look at the SC-61 and on Amazon these guys are going for 799, and the sc-65 is 999. I think the 200 bucks is worth it for the 4k passthrough and the THX certification.... and if one day the wife lets me the 9 speaker potential smile.gif

Thanks! SC-65 it is!

Have you done a search here on SC-1522-k? Same as Elite SC 65. $599 at Costco, but you'd better hurry, almost all gone.

Why go out to a movie theater?

You will not find 1522 deals on line anywhere. Costco is your only option. Costco stores may already sold out. It's been two months. Other authorized dealers can't sell it cheaper than Pioneer allows. 1522 and SC-65 is basically the same thing internally with the exception of Elite badge and different color of the display panel.

Next time, call before you go (they do close on major holidays). Not all Costco stores stock this receiver. Of those do, they probably already sold out.

Thanks guys. While we are all talking can any of you recommend some in walls for my front height and mid surrounds? Right now I have a 5.1 setup, made up of def tech BP series powered floor standing fronts, powered center, bi polar surrounds and a 10 inch velodyne sub. The front towers and center also have subs. I wanted to go with def tech but the reviews in amazon aren't so hot. My other issue is I'm really space confined. I only have about 12 inches in height to play with. I have permission from the wife..... So I need a total of four in walls to play with.

Not a fan of in walls...once there you are sort of locked in. I move my rears around quite a bit to refine the spacial effects. Can't go with bookshelf size on stands? You'll love that flexibility later!
PS, call Costco and ask which store has any 1522's in stock, or are due to get any, it's on their PC.

Will do. I suppose I could do bookshelf speakers..... At least for the front highs. I think it would be impossible for the surrounds tho.

Front highs I would mount on a gimbal and point toward the main listening position, or just past it a few feet. Monoprice has some really good inexpensive mounts, could be used for surrounds too.

Ooooo good idea. I love this place! I think I could actually hang some bi-polar triangular speakers for the surrounds. That would at least look uniform.

Now you're talking. Though I don't have any experience with them - makes good sense to try it.

The only Costco that seems to have them are in AZ. Looks like I'm driving home from Santa Fe to San Diego to make an important pit stop.

You are gonna be one happy camper! Please do me a favor and download the manual from the pioneer site ASAP, and start reading... Now you need to figure out how to arrange 11.2 speakers in your room! ;-)

I can't do 11.1 but I can do 7.1 with front high speakers. For the two new surrounds for my upgrade from 5.1 I'm going to try to score two more def tech BPX's from eBay. What would you use for the front highs? More BPX's? Bookshelfs? Monitors? This is exciting.

Well, I'm on a budget, so after a LOT of research, I went with the Andrew Jones designed Pioneer SP BS22's for front highs, same for the rear center surrounds. I'm quite happy with the sound. I'm running 2 subs, and the fronts are Martin Logan Motion 12's, surrounds will be Pioneer FS52's floor standing towers by Friday. The sound (and video) is mind blowing. For the money those speakers rival ones that cost more than double that IMO.

That's a budget room????!!!! That is awesome! Seeing as I have all def techs..... The ref monitor 350's are 199! That seems cheap and as a bonus they look like my front towers..... Would those work ok?

Thanks! I'd bet they would work fine. Mount them up high, like I did with the BS22's. mine are angled down some, but do not have any toe in.

If Costco is sold out, try Best Buy. They will match Amazon's price. They did on my SC-67 anyway.

Pioneer is upgrading their model line both standard and Elite the new SC-72 looks to be what most 7.1 owners would want with demanding speakers or at least it got my attention since I care nothing about 9.2/11.2 but wanted better amps for 5.1/7.1.

But Amazon price is not the same as Costco price. And the warranty is different as well (life time return on Costco).

It does not look like anything new, other than the 4k upscaling, compared to SC-1522/SC-65. It might be a step up from SC-62.

Until they post the spec page its hard to say other than the statement made on the page available which says their most powerful amp yet for all channels driven which is nice for people that don't have room or want external amps
for demanding speakers.
