Hello, this post is on behalf of my dad who wants to get his audio/home theater system up and running again. He has a pioneer DVD player for movies and CD’s. He has three front speakers (LCR B&W 601 s1 or s2). The speakers are 88 dB sensitive and rate at 8 ohms nominal (4 ohm minimum). He mentioned that before his last receiver blew, he only liked the sound when he turned up the volume to a good level but wasn’t so pleased when listening at lower levels. What he doesn’t have is any amplification or processing. I don’t think he is ready or interested in separates so I suggested he start with a receiver.

He wants to stay around $700 - $800, does not need all of the latest bells and whistles or connectivity options. I gave him the following suggestions: Denon AVR-2313; Marantz SR5007; Yamaha RX-A730. They seemed well regarded, decently powered with some good features. With the thought in mind that good stereo sound quality is his primary interest, what would you suggest.

Thanks, Garth

Not bad choices. A harman/kardon 3600 or 3650 if you can find one on clearance is another good idea. I take it he has no sub, which is fine if he is mostly listening to music not movies. Personally, I would be more happy only using 2 speakers in classic stereo mode.

Check NewEgg. They've been selling the Yamaha A820 for $499. Should be plenty for his needs.

Unless there is some additional feature the 2313CI offers, the 2113CI would also be a good choice as both feature Audyssey MultEQ XT. Both models are on clearance now as the newer "X" models have been released and replaced them. Review post #2 in each of the "2012 Denon AVR-XX13" and "2013 Denon AVR-E/X" Owner's threads linked in my sig to see a comparison of the various models in each series.

Interesting, looked on newegg and didn't see that price for the A820. Maybe all sold out at that price (similar to amazon selling and pricing)

Sale may have ended. Looks like they are still selling the Pioneer 1222-k for $499, another nice choice. I suggest subscribing to NewEgg's e-blast newsletter as they do run some incredibly good specials. A lot of their discount codes will only work if your email adress is registered with them.
