Hi, I'm new to the forum and you guys look like you know a lot more about this stuff than I do.
Looking to replace my HK AVR 30 (technical issues and ancient). Want to stay under $350. The best deals I've found are the Onkyo TX-NR515 ($328 shipped) and Pioneer VSX-822-K ($228 shipped). And, of course, I could go the refurb route and pick up the Onkyo with 2 year warranty for about $250 shipped (or an Onkyo HT-R690 for $228).
I don't like the negative reviews I've seen about the Onkyo HDMI problems, but the issue seems to be solved with the firmware update. At any rate...
I like that in the reviews, the Onkyo seems to be more user friendly than the Pioneer - especially with network streaming (and the lower cost of usb wireless/bluetooth). I also like the IDEA of the upscaling on the Onkyo - I just don't know if it's going to help my particular situation.
When I do play something I'd like upscaled, it would be an mp4 or avi off an external hard drive which I plug into the back of my Samsung Plasma using USB port. The videos already look decent - I'm just wondering if running the external thru the Onkyo 515 USB port would upscale the avi/mp4 and improve the quality.
I have an XBOX 360 and could play the avi/mp4 thru the XBOX into the TV or into the Onkyo 515. I also have a WD media player with HDMI that I could use thru the 515.
So, I guess there are two questions:
1: Is upscaling going to help avi/mp4 files at all?
2: Does the upscaling work thru the USB port as well as thru the HDMI ports on the Onkyos?
Thanks a lot!
