I am ready to pull the trigger on the Krell Foundation or Marantz 8801.

I am aware there is a price difference, i already have cables and i am not interested in Integra or Onkyo. Please stay on track with this thread.

I would appreciate the pro's and cons of these 2 units hooked up to a Krell Showcase 7.1 amp running at 4 ohms giving me 250 per channel into Thiel Power Points and a Velodyne DD15 sub.

The Krell Foundation has no video processing which concerns me.

Thank You for all the input ahead of time.

7.2 with Thiel Power Points, twin Seaton Submersive F2's in Espresso. Krell Showcase Amp, Marantz Pre-Pro, Richard Grey Power, Control 4 Home Automation, lots of Blue Jean Cables, Oppo 103D, Sony DVD 777 400 Disc Changer and Samsung Plasma 64" 8500 all in a Salamander Synergy 247 in Walnut.

Having a video processor in a pre/pro usually is unnecessary. All digital displays include a scaler: it's required to match whatever video signal is coming in to the physical resolution of the display. If you need a better processor than is included in the display or Blu-ray player, an external video processor probably is more appropriate.

However, the Krell provides only 7.1 audio channels, while the Marantz has 11.2. Enhancing your sound system to include both width and height speakers and another subwoofer is something you might want to consider.

I haven't seen any reviews comparing Krell's proprietary room equalization with Audyssey XT32. I'd consider that comparison to be quite important.

Thank you for the reply. I plan on sticking with my 7.1 setup because of my environment. It would be great if there was some kind of comparison with the Audyssey as you suggest.

Krell calls the Foundation a 7.1 but it actually has 2 sub outs and is a 7.2

Am i missing something?

Having two sub outs does not necessarily make it a 7.2 processor. Quite a few receivers and pre-pros just have an internal jumper between the two connectors and can't measure their distances and volume levels separately. I don't see anything explicit either way on the Krell site, although it does say "determine unique EQ curves for each of the 7.1 output channels" and not 7.2.

A Web search located the owner's manual for the Foundation. I can't find any mention at all of how ARES handles subwoofers. That part of the manual just says "speakers". I suggest you give Krell a call to find out for sure.

Music is where I would think the Krell will shine. Traditionally, brands like Krell, Classe, Rotel aren't known to have the latest features, yet they command a premium for the way they render music. If you listen to a lot of music, then Krell might be a better bet.
The Marantz will likely give you newer features like 4k capabilities, 11.2 outputs, more connectivity options etc.
Lack of video processing is actually a desirable feature, as most AVR's don't do it well. I am currently upgrading my HDMI board to get a 3D pass-through on my AVR as well(Arcam).
Is it possible for you to audition these? It might help make up your mind.

also, given that you have a Krell Amp, any particular reason why you're looking at the Marantz? Is it because of the price alone?

I would love to know how the Foundation stacks up to say the Bryston SP3 and of course the 8801. Does the Krell match the 10-12$K processors or is it a true in between, the next step up above the 8801, or just more money? Are any reviewers (Kal?) up to the challenge of sorting that out?

Main Kef: Reference 205/2 & 202/2c, Surrounds: Kef XQ40, Velodyne Optimum 12, Integra DHC 80.3, Oppo BDP-103, Bryston 4Bsst2, Parasound Halo A31. Second B&W: 685 (3), CCM618, Def Tech Powerfield 1500, Onkyo TX-NR1008, DBP 2010, Samsung BD-C7900, Zone 2 Klipsch AW650. Sitting still CCM616, Kef...

The 8801 shines on music as well and very well at that wink.gif

I have been promised a Foundation for review but, until I get to use it, I cannot comment.

That is excellent! I hope you get one soon and look forward to your review should it happen.

+2. I have read a couple user reviews on the net. I am in the same boat. I will be using only 7.2 or 7.1 with two subs set up the same distance from sweet spot. So the .1 is no problem for me. I don't want video processing in my processor. I listen to a lot of music with my oppo 105. This seems like the perfect fit. Everybody that has heard it is absolutely impressed. If it weren't for the high price I would already have one. Kal did you hear it at CES?

I saw it at CES and, recently, at the NY show.

I do not put much stock in show demos as there are too many unknowns and variables to draw any conclusions.  I made my request for one based on discussions and feature set.
